Dr. Oh Ke-Hi

Dr. Oh Ke-Hi, devoted father and esteemed educator, peacefully passed away at the age of 86 on the evening of July 27, 2023, in Draper, UT, surrounded by the love of his family.

Dr. Oh lived a life prioritizing his family and Church, and a devotion to service in the Korean community and all those around him. His sincerity, selflessness, and kind soul earned him respect from all who knew him. With his gentle humor and genuine interest in young minds, he was easy to love and admire. His humility, intelligence, and warmth endeared him to everyone he met. Above all, he found unparalleled joy in his children and grandchildren, devoting his time to cherished moments with each of them and leaving his stalwart example ingrained in them. A constant pillar of support and the greatest fan of his wife, he remained by her side and in her heart forever.

Born in Manchuria, China on June 1, 1937, Dr. Oh was the eldest of six siblings. His journey began in Busan, Korea, where he excelled as a diligent student and later served in the military. Driven by his passion for education, he moved to Seoul and attended Yonsei University, earning both a bachelor's and a master's degree.

During his time at Yonsei University, he met fellow Yonsei student, Kim, Kyoung-Ah as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Seoul, Korea. They were first civilly married in Seoul and on November 19, 1969, they were sealed for all time and eternity in the Salt Lake City Utah Temple. Their new American life started in Provo, UT, where Dr. Oh pursued a second master's degree at Brigham Young University. Subsequently, they settled in Seattle, WA, where he earned his doctorate degree in education from the University of Washington. Together, they raised and watched their three children excel in the Seattle area and dedicated their efforts and talents to strengthening the Korean community. After 45 years, they moved to Draper, UT in 2016.

Dr. Oh devoted 31 years of his career to the Seattle School District, working in the bilingual education department as a teacher. He embraced the opportunity to teach immigrant children from diverse backgrounds, striving to improve their lives through mindful education.

As one of the first Korean-Americans in the Seattle area since 1970, Dr. Oh played an instrumental role in the growth and betterment of the Seattle Korean community. He actively participated in the Seattle Washington State Korean Association, holding various positions including President and board member. In 1982, fueled by his passion for education and desire to promote Korean literacy and cultural awareness among second-generation Korean-Americans in Seattle, Dr. Oh founded the Seattle Washington Korean School and served as its principal for over 15 years. Additionally, he served on the Advisory Council on Peaceful Unification Policy, Washington State, always nurturing his deep love for his homeland of Korea.

A man of unwavering faith, Dr. Oh was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Having been baptized in Busan, Korea in 1955, he played a significant role in the Church's early days in Korea, actively contributing to its growth in the country. He instilled the same faith in his family while in the United States, and in 2011, he and his wife returned to Seoul, to serve a church mission.

Dr. Oh is survived by his loving wife, Oh Kyoung-Ah, their three children and their spouses – Rachel (Mee-Kyoung) Oh; Erik (Seong-Man) and Denise (Winter) Oh; Miriam (Hae-Kyoung) and Matt Painter; and five beautiful grandchildren – Kimball, Mia, and Bode Oh, and Truman and Rachel Painter. He is also survived by his three younger siblings - sister, Oh Hui-Sook; brother Oh Ik-Hui, and brother Oh Jong-Hui. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oh Sang-Hyun, Kwon Choon-Young, and two siblings.

Dr. Oh Ke-Hi's life touched countless souls, and his legacy of love, compassion, and service will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. May his memory continue to inspire us all to be kind, humble, and devoted to those we hold dear.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 11:30 AM, at the Korean Ward chapel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8171 South Jackson Street, Midvale, UT. Prior to the memorial, a viewing will take place from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. The service will also be broadcast via Zoom. Following the memorial, a graveside service will be held at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, UT, at 1:30 PM.

헌신적인 아버지이자 존경받는 교육자이신 오 계희 박사는, 사랑하는 가족들이 함께 하는
가운데 2023년 7월 27일 저녁, 향년 86세로 유타주 드레이퍼에서 평온하게 영면하셨습니다.
고인은 가족과 교회를 우선시하는 삶을 사시며 한인사회와 주변 사람들에게 봉사로
헌신하셨습니다. 그분의 성실함과 이타심, 그리고 따뜻한 마음은 그분를 알고 있는 모든
분들로 부터 존경을 받았습니다. 부드러운 유머와 순수한 마음에서 나오는 진실한 관심으로
인해 사랑과 존경의 대상이었습니다. 그분의 겸손함, 지혜, 그리고 따뜻함은 그분을 만난 모든
사람들에게는 호감을 느끼게 하였습니다. 무엇보다도, 자녀들 그리고 손자들과 소중하고 의미
있는 순간들을 함께 보내시며 비할 데 없는 큰 기쁨을 느끼셨으며 그들에게 확고한 모범을
남기셨습니다. 아내를 위한 끊임없는 지지와 최고의 팬으로서 평생을 그녀 곁에 함께
하셨습니다.

1937년 6월 1일 중국 만주에서 태어나신 고인은 여섯 남매 중 장남으로 태어났습니다.
고인의 여정은 열심히 공부하는 학생으로 두각을 나타내고 군복무를 했던 한국 부산에서
시작 되었습니다. 교육에 대한 열정에 이끌려 서울로 상경하여 연세대학교에 입학하여
그곳에서 학사와 석사 학위를 받았습니다.

연세 대학을 다니던 시절 고인은 한국 서울에서 같은 학교 학생이며 예수 그리스도 후기
성도 교회의 회원인 아내 김경아 자매를 만나게 되었습니다, 그들은 서울에서 현세적인
결혼을 먼저하고, 1969년 11월 19일 유타주 솔트레이크시티 성전에서 현세와 영원을 위한
인봉을 하였습니다. 그들의 새로운 미국 생활은 유타주 프로보에서 시작되었으며, 고인은
브리검 영 대학교에서 두번째 석사 학위를 취득하기 위해 노력했습니다. 그 이후에 교육박사
학위를 받은 워싱턴 대학교가 있는 워싱턴주 시애틀에 정착하여 생활하게 됩니다. 그곳에서
그들은 함께 세 자녀들을 양육하고 돌보는 가운데 시애틀 지역의 한인사회를 강화하는데
그들의 헌신적인 노력과 재능을 바쳤습니다. 45년의 시간을 그곳에서 보낸 뒤에, 2016년에
유타주 드레이퍼로 이사하였습니다.

고인은 31년 동안 시애틀 학교 교육부에서 교사로 근무하며 다양한 문화적 배경의 이민자
자녀들을 가르치는 이중언어 교육에 헌신했습니다. 그들의 삶을 개선하기 위해 뜻 깊은
교육을 제공함으로써 그들의 삶을 개선하는 데에 헌신하셨습니다.

1970년부터 시애틀 지역에서 초기 미국계 한인의 한분으로서, 고인은 시애틀 워싱턴 주
한인사회의 성장과 발전에 중요한 역할을 담당 하셨습니다. 시애틀 워싱턴주 한인회에
적극적으로 참여하여 회장 및 이사 등 다양한 직책을 수행하셨고. 1982년에는 교육에 대한
열정과 교포 2세들을 위한 한국어 실력과 문화 인식 증진을 위해 시애틀 워싱턴 한국학교를
설립하고 15년 이상 학교장으로 활동하였습니다. 또한, 언제나 자신의 조국인 한국에 대한
뜨거운 애정을 간직하며 평화통일 정책 자문위원회에 참여하였습니다.

고인은 확고한 신앙을 가진 예수 그리스도 후기성도 교회의 헌신적인 회원이었습니다.
1955년 한국 부산에서 침례를 받은 뒤, 교회의 초기 시기에 한국 내 성장에 큰 역할을
담당하며 교회를 성장시키는 데 기여했습니다. 미국에서 생활 하면서도 가족들에게 같은
신앙을 심어주었으며, 2011년에는 부인과 함께 서울로 돌아가 교회 선교 사업을
수행하였습니다.

고인의 유족으로는 그분의 사랑하는 부인이신 오 경아 자매와 함께 세명의 자녀들인 미경,
성만, 그리고 해경과 그들의 배우자들인 데니스, 매트 그리고 아름다운 다섯 손주- 킴볼,
미아, 보드, 그리고 트루먼과 레이첼이 있습니다. 또한 생존해 계신 고인의 세분의 남매
오희숙, 오익희, 그리고 오종희 님이 계십니다. 고인의 부모님 되시는 오 상현님 과 권 춘영님
그리고 두 분의 형제는 먼저 세상을 떠났셨습니다.

고인께서는 수많은 분들의 삶에 영향을 미쳤으며, 그분의 사랑, 연민, 봉사의 유산은 고인을
아시는 사람들의 마음 속에 영원히 간직될 것입니다. 고인께서 계속해서 우리 모두에게
친절하고 겸손하며 사랑하는 이들에게 헌신적인 사람이 되도록 영감을 주시는 분으로
기억되기를 바랍니다.

고인의 장례식은 2023 년 8 월 12 일 토요일 오전 11 시 30 분에 8171 South Jackson Street,
Midvale, UT. 에 있는 예수 그리스도 후기성도 교회 한인 와드 예배당에서 열릴 예정입니다.
장례식 이전에는 오전 10 시부터 11 시까지 조문이 있을 예정이며, 장례식은 Zoom 을
통해서도 방송될 예정입니다. 장례식 이후에는 오후 1 시 30 분에 장지인 1950 East 10600
South, Sandy, UT 에 있는 Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery 에서 무덤 헌납식 진행될
예정입니다.
