Gladys Gilbert Thomson Avery

1923 ~ 2014

Our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother Gladys Gilbert Thomson Avery passed away of natural causes on April 23, 2014, at age 91 in Bountiful, Utah. She possessed a joyful, resourceful, optimistic, intelligence that marked all she did. She was born April 8, 1923, the daughter of Truman D. and Laura M. Gilbert in Whitney, Idaho. She graduated from West High and shortly after, married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Marshall Thomson Jr. on May 1, 1942, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were the parents of Kathleen (Alan) Parker, Thomas G. (Karen), Debora (David) Plummer, Gary (Diana) and Jeffrey (Judy). After her husband's death, she served a mission in Louisiana and Texas ‚ the Houston Texas Mission. While on her mission, she met Carl Avery. They renewed a friendship after she returned home and then they were married for time in the Salt Lake Temple. Her posterity includes 29 grandchildren and 77 great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for great times at Bear Lake, her crocheted afghans, Christmas gingerbread houses, cheese and bacon sandwiches, jalape√±o jelly, hand made cards with pressed wild flowers, chats on the patio and so much more. Mom believed anything could be accomplished and she empowered her children to see their own abilities as limitless. She never wasted time on guilt, blame or gossip. Her life mirrored her advice that, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." She was the epitome of "Unconditional Love." She loved Bear Lake and Island Park and helping people and sharing anything she had. She always had candy and ice cream for anyone that visited. The world will never know another soul like Gladys or Gladdy. Her greatest accomplishment is her love for her Heavenly Father and dedication to our Savior Jesus Christ. She dedicated her life in service to her family and she taught by her example of selflessness, relentless love, forgiveness, and charity. Her favorite grand-child is the one standing in front of her. She is survived by her brothers Bob (Marge) and Dick (Delores) Gilbert and her surviving children. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas M. Thomson Jr. and Carl Avery, her son Thomas G. Thomson, her siblings Fawn Mendenhall, Paul and Carl Gilbert, her grandchildren Allison Parker and Scott Plummer and her great-granddaughter Dayna Davis. There was a great celebration in heaven on Wednesday night with her beloved husband Tom after a 32-year separation. We will miss her talking like Donald Duck. Viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. followed by funeral services at 12:00 noon. Many thanks to the Avalon Care Center in Bountiful, Utah.
