Donald Wayne Pearson

1922 ~ 2017

Donald W. Pearson, our beloved husband, brother, father and grandfather passed away at home, on March 8, in the care of a loving daughter and grandson. Though he died from complications brought on by Alzheimer's, the disease never dampened his sense of humor or diminished his love for his devoted companion Jeanne. He often told her, and anyone around him, how much he loved her and that he would always do what she told him to do! She was the boss!

Born December 3, 1922, Don was raised in downtown Salt Lake City. He attended West High and was a Panther for life, often attending football games even after his children had graduated. He met his first wife, LuRae, and in 1941 they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple and enjoyed almost 49 years together before she died of cancer. He served her, day and night with love and devotion as she suffered. In 1991 he married Jeanne Campbell. She was the light and joy of his life. When he died, they were celebrating 26 years of marriage. Don was active in the LDS Church his entire life and served faithfully when called upon. He loved others.

‘Gramps" worked as a Police Officer for the Salt Lake Police Department for 37 years. He rose to the rank of Captain and was in charge of several different departments during the last half of his career. He loved being a policeman and was very proud of his occupation. He would often give kids in the neighborhood rides on his three-wheeled motorcycle that he rode for some ten years doing accident investigation. He also served for two years honorably in the Army during World War II.

Always looking for a way to further support his family he worked extra jobs for many years as a "cop" at Bees baseball games, The Terrace, Lagoon, Big-time Wrestling, the State Fair, Shrine Circus and the University Of Utah football and basketball games. At some point in his later years he somehow became a BYU fan! Don worked hard.

Gramps' middle name was service. When he wasn't working, he was doing brake jobs in his driveway, electrical work in basements, or helping with plumbing or painting. If it wasn't perfect, it wasn't for a lack of trying! Many parents brought their problems to him, particularly children who had lost their way. He counseled with them, intervened on their behalf, or warned them of the consequences of bad behavior. He ended each night by reading the newspaper and falling asleep in front of the TV. Don served others.

Don is survived by his wife Jeanne, children Shirlee (Kurt) Randall, Drew (Cathie) Pearson, Sharon (Tom) Shaw, Susan (Craig) Oliver, Terry (Jill) Campbell, Cheri (Randy) Hubrich. He has 21 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren and other family too numerous to list. Don was preceded in death by his sweet and patient wife LuRae, his daughter Shawna and five siblings.

Our family would like to thank all those who have cared for Don and offered selfless service on his behalf, particularly over the last few years. Services will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m. in the LDS chapel located at 1620 East Buttercup Drive (10075 S) in Sandy. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. ‚ 12:30 p.m. at the same address. Interment will be at the Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery at 6500 South Redwood Road. In lieu of flowers, sing a happy song, tell your loved ones how special they are, or sit in a comfortable chair and reflect on a life well-lived!
