Epigmenio Kim Torres

1974 ~ 2023

Epigmenio Kim Torres passed away unexpectedly on July 9, 2023, at the age of 48, in Sandy, Utah.

Kim was born in Santa Paula, California, on August 10, 1974, to Pamela Wilson Torres and Epigmenio Isydoro Torres. Kim had a happy childhood growing up in the small town of Fillmore, California, where he excelled in academics, played in the band and graduated early from Fillmore High School in 1991. Kim graduated from Cal State Northridge with a BA in Spanish and later obtained a BS in Accounting from the University of Phoenix.

In 1998, he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Winmill in Los Angeles, California. Kim and Betsy met during their teenage years when Betsy’s family moved to Fillmore. They’ve lived in cities within California, Arizona, and Utah, where they settled and bought a home. Together, they welcomed 5 brilliant and kind children, who adored their dad and inherited all of his best qualities, including his humor! He loved to spend time with his family, where he enjoyed introducing his children to his favorite music and movies, and of course, new and exotic foods. One of Kim’s favorite things to do was to work on projects with loved ones. He enjoyed cooking, car repairs, home improvement, gardening, or just gathering to work on Legos and puzzles with his children. Kim’s quick wit and kind nature drew many lifelong friends to him.

In his career, Kim started in the insurance industry and transitioned over to accounting. He worked closely with his best friend, Justin Burnett. Most recently, Kim was the Corporate Controller for Danville Services. He would often speak with affection and concern about his friends and colleagues and cared deeply about their well-being. Affectionately nicknamed “The Velvet Hammer”, Kim excelled at helping his team reach their goals, always with kindness and support, and was never hesitant to roll up his sleeves and pitch in when needed.

Kim was much-loved for his sense of humor, loyalty, compassion, and work ethic. He took great pride in being reliable and hard-working. Anyone who knew Kim would tell you that a promise made by Kim, was a promise kept.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Betsy, his children Sam (22), Phoebe (21), Gabriel (18), Jane (16), Lena (14), his parents, Pam and Epi Torres, and his siblings, Andrew (Camaille) Torres, Marta Mills, Joel Torres, and Robyn (Geno) Hammer, and many loving friends.

A Celebration of Kim’s life will be held Saturday July 15 from 4 to 5pm (MST) at the Chateau at the Rose Shop in Sandy, Utah 1910 East Dimple Dell Road. A dinner for invited guests to follow at 5:30.

For those unable to attend the service in person, the family invites you to join via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85990753062. A free Zoom account is required and you will need to sign in to join.

Dear Betsy and Torres family,
My name is Kenyon Blackhurst. I work for Executech and had the privilege of working with Kim over the last 3 years. He was a wonderful man and I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I consider Kim a friend. We have had many personal conversations over the years and I truly admired him as a friend, colleague, and Husband/Father as he often spoke of his family and friends. I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain you must all be feeling.

I am traveling this weekend but will join the celebration of life virtually. Thank you for sharing this time with those of us that got to know Kim outside of his personal life.

I have kept your family in my thoughts and prayers and wish the best as you grieve for this wonderful man.
Sincerely, Kenyon Blackhurst

His obituary details only a small part of the great things about Kim. A terrific person to know, and he will be missed for the rest of our lives. The entire Torres Family is on our minds and in our hearts. All of our love to all that loved Kim.

- The Seastone Family

Geography and age difference meant Kim and I didn’t get to share many moments together, a fact I truly lament. In our limited time with each other, he showed such compassion and love. During one of hardest periods, Kim reached out with love and support. I was never able to convey how much that simple act meant for me. One memory has become prophetic
After a long time apart, we meet again to celebrate. After many drinks, Kim laughingly declared to me “Don’t remember me this way!” I can only remember Kim as one of the most caring and compassionate people I’ve ever encountered. Rest well, Kim.

I offer my deepest condolences to your family at such a sudden and heartbreaking loss. May your sweet memories made over the many years together comfort you and fill you with gratitude for the time you were so fortunate to share together, as it’s clear Kim crafted a meaningful legacy. I recall his rendition of “Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let It Begin With Me,” sung so beautifully with his mother, which left an impression on me I treasure to this day. Much love and our very best wishes to you, from my family and I.

- Timi Willis (Reid)

I just want to say I am sorry for our loss. Kim was kind and had a great sense of humor. I remember him sticking up for me once at his house on Island view when we were kids. One of his friends made a comment about my legs when they came out of the house and I could tell he got upset and told his friend that I was just a kid. Watching Kim through my kid eyes I looked up to him. He was smart, he was always welcoming he had the best smile, and he could do anything he put his mind to.
I will miss my cousin dearly. Just knowing he was here on earth with us made this world a better place. He led by example, showing us all how to be kind, how to love and how to have humor in everyday life.

- Beth Lopez Barajas
