Ethel Alice Enger

1923 ~ 2016

Ethel Alice Enger of Sandy, Utah passed on February 21, 2016. She was born on February 5, 1923 in Ogden, Utah to Howard Charles Hocking and Marvel Susannah Hodson. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Eldon Enger on October 29, 1941 in Ogden, Utah.

Ethel was blessed with many talents and abilities which were used to bless the lives of her family and many others in different and lasting ways. Her brilliantly colored and pieced quilts, lush and realistic oil landscapes, and holiday crafts galore - all expressions of her artistic talents and energy - were always generously shared with family and friends. Ethel was a great cook and showed her love with family by serving delicious meals. Her rolls were one of her specialties.

Ethel loved the outdoors ‚ the wind and rain, the beach, and spending time in the cool canyons in the summer. She loved and cultivated beautiful flowers. She was often out in her backyard tending to the garden, almost always barefoot. Ethel and Bob spent many glorious days in Montana at Hebgen Lake taking grandchildren to fish and just wander in the woods.

Ethel was blessed with a very curious and bright mind, always learning and encouraging her children to learn and improve. She read a newspaper every day and cut out articles to share with children and grandchildren. She was using her computer and ipad until very recently. She was quick-witted and had a great sense of humor. A favorite activity was playing cards with family, talking and laughing ‚ she also loved to win.

She loved her family dearly and always sacrificed her needs for theirs, teaching them early a love of and trust in Jesus Christ. She worked at developing inherent strengths received from her pioneer heritage. It influenced her as she came to know of the abiding love of and developed a deep testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. These motivated her directly as she reached out in a lifetime of service.

In addition to the care of her family, she faithfully served many others. As a mother of three young children with a husband who had returned from WW II to work night shifts for a time, she served as Young Women's President in Elko, Nevada where part of her calling included the young women of a local Shoshone tribe. Through the years she served in Young Women and Relief Society presidencies in Redwood City and Sacramento, California. In Utah she was blessed to serve for many years with Bob in the Jordan River Temple as ordinance workers. Later she also served as a Church Service Missionary in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Her children, Lyn Ashby, Robert, Kip and Ray Enger, 19 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren have all begun missing her dearly.

Memorial services will be held at the Pepperwood Chapel, 2195 East Pepperwood Drive, Sandy, Utah on February 27. There will be a viewing from 9:30 ‚ 10:30. The funeral service will commence at 11:00.
