Frederick Aikens Smith

1936 ~ 2024

Frederick A. Smith passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Fred was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 5, 1936, to Nathaniel A. and Lydia Heiniger Smith. He was the youngest of four children. Fred graduated from East High School and later from the University of Utah with a degree in sociology, where he was affiliated with the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the Swiss Austria Mission and loved being a missionary. He married Claudia Dewsnup in the Salt Lake Temple on March 16, 1962. He was the much-loved father of five children: Brad (Becky), Anthony (Jennifer), Heather (Mark Williams), Natalie (Andrew Hoopes), and Adam (Michelle). He enjoyed his 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He had a lifelong passion for cars and spent several years in automobile sales. Fred was talented musically and loved singing and playing both the piano and the guitar. He enjoyed singing in a quartet with his 3 sons. Fred served in many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including serving as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple for 7 years. Fred and Claudia served for 6 years in the Veteran’s Administration branch, where Fred served as a member of the branch presidency. Fred had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and will be remembered for his kind and gentle way with people. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gordon (Joanne), and his two sisters Geraldine (John Sanders) and Marie (James O. Mason). The family wishes to thank the staff at Beehive Assisted Living for their kindness in caring for Fred.

A viewing will be held in Fred’s honor on Friday, January 26th from 6-8 pm, as well as from 10-10:45 am on Saturday, January 27th prior to the funeral service. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on January 27th. All services will be held at the Bonneville Stake Center located at 1535 East Bonneview Drive in Salt Lake City. Interment will be at 12:30 pm on January 27th at Larkin Sunset Lawn, located at 2350 East 1300 South in Salt Lake City.
