Allen Joseph Malstrom

1929 ~ 2016

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Allen Joseph Malstrom, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by his loving family. Al was born November 15, 1929 in Murray, Utah, the 10th child and second son of Edward Lorenzo and Clara Bateman Malstrom. He was especially close to all of his siblings, who played a large role in raising Al, as his father died shortly after his birth. He learned to love the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting with his older brother, Art. Grandpa Al spent countless hours patiently helping his children and grandchildren catch the "Big One." Al loved all the beauties of God's creations, spending many nights under the stars. As a navigator in the Air Force, he knew all the constellations.

Shortly after beginning his 20-year military career, while stationed in Portland, he met and fell in love with Ila Dene Iverson. He danced his way into her heart. They married on November 4, 1954 and together raised their two children. Al and Dee defined love and service for their posterity, especially evident as Al's health declined. Al retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1971 and began his second career as a Mining Engineer for Stauffer Chemical. Following Dee's retirement as a school teacher, they then divided their time between Salt Lake City, Utah and Pinedale, Wyoming. If Al wasn't fishing at Soda Lake near Pinedale, he could usually be found playing golf in Salt Lake or playing bridge with friends and family. Al was full of kindness, love and generosity. He spent many hours patiently teaching, loving and helping his grandchildren.

Al is survived by his loving wife, Dee, two children, Mary Jane (Mark) and Jim (Sara), nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, daughter-in-law Diane and granddaughter Mackenzie.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016, 11:00 a.m., at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, where friends and family may visit one hour prior to services. Interment to follow at the West Jordan City Cemetery.

Special appreciation is expressed to the entire staff at the William E. Christoffersen Veteran's Home.
