Carter Evan Jones, Jr., son of Carter Evan Jones, Sr. and Betty Platt Jones, passed away on Thursday, September 14th, one year after being diagnosed with cancer. True to his faithful, dutiful nature, Carter spent his last year serving the Lord and his fellow man as a full time MLS missionary in the S.L.C. South Mission.
Carter was born on February 5, 1943 in N.Y. City, where his father worked for the FBI. He told us that his parents almost named him FIBNY. We'll never know if it's true. Carter's fun personality and gift for making friends served him well, first at East High, then at the U. of U., where he completed his MBA in Finance.
Following his mission to Australia, he found a girl who shared his devotion to God and who loved to laugh as much as he did. Carter and Kathleen Haight were sealed on November 23, 1966 in the Salt Lake Temple. They left for the East coast, where Lt. Jones served in the U.S. Navy for three years. His career of 40 years as a financial counselor began at Merrill Lynch in 1971. This led him to other opportunities: Director of Branches for Boettcher and Co. in Denver and Executive V.P. of sales and marketing for Kemper Securities in Chicago. He returned to S.L.C. to do what he loved most, teaching individuals how to gain financial security.
Carter held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served in three temples as an Ordinance Worker, and completed a third mission with his wife in the Boston Massachusetts Mission from 2012-2014.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen, his three children: Julie (Jared) Ferguson, Dyan (Swen) Sullivan, and Daniel Carter (Shelly) Jones; and his nine grandchildren: Ammon, Carter, Gavin, Seth, Brynne, Aidan, Evan, Elise, and Ian. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Dennis Christopherson and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
We can't end this synopsis of Carter's life without including his love of sports, especially baseball. He played in the Huntsman Senior Games for 20 years. He was also devoted to Kiwanis, serving as Lt. Governor for 2 years. He established a Key Club at Hamden High School in Connecticut and sponsored the Key Club at Horizonte School in Salt Lake, where he received the Community Partner Award for 2017.
His was a life well lived.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Jordan Heights Chapel, 4021 W. Shinnerock Drive (11225 South), South Jordan.
