Gary, Alan Smart was born on September 12, 1957. He passed peacefully in his sleep Monday, June 19, 2023.

He exceeded all expectations with his diagnosis of dementia for over a decade.

He has been a kind, loving husband to Kimberly Anderson Smart and a father to four beautiful daughters; Stephanie, Heather, Kelsie, and Kiersten.

He enjoyed making people laugh with his fun nature and great sense of humor. He loved cracking jokes and getting giggles out of all those around him.

He served a mission in Hong Kong, where he met and baptized CY, who would become his lifelong friend and their bond would become stronger than brothers. His love for Hong Kong would continue to grow as he loved listening to Asian music and speaking Cantonese, whenever he had the opportunity.

The choices he made early in life would have an everlasting effect on generations to come as these two families have traveled often to be with one another creating lifelong bonds.

His other passions have been owning and operating Chocolate Cottage, his love for his family and all those around him, spending time outdoors, and many sports including golf and racquetball.

Some of Gary’s most notable attributes are simplicity, wit, humor, kindness, and compassion for everyone he knows and meets.

The family would like to thank Auberge memory care for their many kindnesses and loving support over the last few months.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 24 at Canyon View Church 9119 S. 1300 East. Viewing 11:30 am. Funeral 1 pm. To watch the recorded service, please click the "Watch Services" tab above.

Guestbook/Condolences

We were so sad to hear about your loss. Gary was always so kind and gave the best hugs. The disease of dementia is heartbreaking - to watch the people we love most go through it, is one of the hardest things. I know he is in a better place, free from any confusion and surrounded by clarity and angels - All our love to your family!
