Glyn Nora Ruth Schmitt Hall

1934 ~ 2022

Glyn Nora Ruth Schmitt Hall, daughter of Nicholas Casper Schmitt and Mary May Clark Schmitt-Groves, was born February 22, 1934, in Warsaw, Kosciusko, Indiana. She attended Warsaw City High School where she was the salutatorian of her graduating class. After graduating high school, she went on to attend Brigham Young University studying General Education. While at BYU, she met Richard Earl Hall, and they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 7, 1955.

While in Provo, they had their first two children, Kenneth Earl and Elizabeth Anne. After Richard graduated from BYU, they moved to Scottdale, AZ where she focused on raising her two children. In 1963, the family moved to Houston, TX after Richard accepted a new position at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. In Houston, Glyn and Richard welcomed their third and fourth children, James Alan and Steven Michael.
After making sure her children were well on their way in life, she returned to school herself, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Education, specializing in art and science education, in 1985. She would spend the next 15 years teaching elementary school students art formally in the classroom, while tutoring students in science and math as well. Before retiring, she worked as a peer facilitator, helping fellow educators improve their teaching methods and techniques. Several of her former students have credited her for giving them their love of art.

Her life was spent serving in various callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including BSA Advancement Chair where she earned several awards and assisted numerous young men in attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, Sunday School teacher, Ward Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society President, teacher in the Young Women & Primary organizations, Nursery leader, and Stake Primary President. What she enjoyed thoroughly, however, was serving in the Houston Texas Temple. In 1999 Richard and Glyn were called to preside over the Nigeria Lagos Mission for the Church. While in Nigeria, she was able to forge relationships that lasted the rest of her life. She loved Nigeria and the Nigerian people.

Glyn loved to sew all her life, including everything from making outlandish outfits and costumes that her children loved to wear to regularly reupholstering all the furniture in the house. She was still working on several sewing projects up until the end of her life.

She is survived by her four children, Kenneth Earl (Martha), Elizabeth Anne (James D.), James Alan (Darlene) and Steven Michael (Samira), 16 grandchildren Joseph Earl (Christina), Richard Daniel (Kelly), Robert Kenneth (Violet), Nicholas Brian (Jennifer), Sarah Elizabeth Smith (Gavin), Brandon Darcy Clawson (Samantha), Kayleigh Mardell Wright (Christopher), Katherine Elizabeth Bowerman (Russell), Jayce Matthew Clawson, Justine Lanae Hardy (Joshua), Rebecca Christine Boring (Carl), Darci Renee, Todd Richard Clawson (Angela), Meg Briana Dale (Ryan), Olivia Potts, James Michael and Miriam, 37 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Glyn was preceded in death by her eternal companion, Richard Earl Hall, her parents Nicholas Casper Schmitt and Mary May Clark, her sisters Margaret Junita Melton and Shirley Jo Cunningham, brothers Nicholas Casper Schmitt, Jr and Fredrick William Schmitt, her son-in-law James Darcy Clawson and two great-grandsons Jordan and Grayson Wright.

A family visitation will be held on Saturday, April 16th, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary - Downtown, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah with a graveside service at the Salt Lake City Cemetery to follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' Perpetual Education Fund or Missionary Fund.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Retreat at Sunbrook for the care given to Glyn/Mom/Grandma/Great Grandma during her stay there.

So sorry for your loss. She was a great lady and very faithful. At least you know she’s with her husband and other family members. I really enjoyed her friendship while we lived in Texas.

So thankful you are home with Rich at last. Thank-you for your example, love, kindness, and for raising an amazing son to marry our daughter Samira. So thankful we had one last dinner together to celebrate our granddaughter, Miriam Hall.

Love,

So many memories made with the Hall family. Highlight of my younger years was spending time at the Hall's with Elizabeth. Glyn was always so kind to me. A second mother to me for sure!
Prayers to all of you in the loss of your wonderful mother.
