Gordon Kay Funk, aged 69, passed away on March 17, 2026, after suffering a severe fall. He was born May 10, 1956, in Gunnison, Utah, to Norma Jean and Alvin Odell Funk.
Gordon grew up in Centerfield, Utah, raised by his mother as an only child. He graduated from Gunnison Valley High School in 1974, then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Diego, California, from 1976 to 1978. In 1976, he completed his studies at Snow College, later earning a bachelor’s degree with high honors in Elementary Education and Art Endorsements from Utah State University in 1980.
Gordon married his angel wife, Shawna Davis, at the Manti Temple in 1980. They had two children: Chris (Emily) Funk and Melissa (Bret) Foust. Gordon is also survived by his granddaughters Sophia and Stella Funk, and grandsons Fallen, Kingston, and Bodin Foust. His absence will be deeply felt.
Gordon taught at Terra Linda Elementary for 23 years, earning the affection of students and parents alike. He loved music, especially Garth Brooks and Michael Bublé—drawing, his Ford Mustang, and anything Tommy Hilfiger.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all the nurses and doctors at IMC, with special appreciation for the ICU Shock Trauma Unit.
He is survived by cousins Doug Sorenson and Bruce Sorenson; his aunt Margaret Ann & uncle Lloyd Kofford; cousins Kurt Oliverson, and Dave Adams; stepmother Arlene Funk; stepsiblings Jeri and Kelly Young, Shanna and Wendell Roberts, Glenn and Brenda Funk, Chad & Julie Funk, and Brad and Shilo Funk; and many other cherished relatives not listed here.
Gordon was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Jean Funk, and father Alvin Odell Funk; stepbrother Shane Funk, aunt Lois Sorenson, uncle Kurt Sorenson; cousins Russell Sorenson, Stacy Simper, LoraLee Oliverson, and Mary Lynn Adams; father-in-law David Davis, and mother-in-law Audrey Davis.
He will be greatly missed by all, and as Bodin Bear Foust would say: bye pa! Gordon, your checkbook is finally balanced.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am on March 28, 2026, at the Ward Meeting House, 9376 South 4000 West, West Jordan, UT 84088. A viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary - Riverton, 3688 West 12600 South, Riverton, UT 84065, on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 6-8 pm, as well as Saturday prior to services at the ward beginning at 9 am. Interment and graveside services will take place in Centerfield, Utah at approximately 3 pm.

Gordon was a genuine human being. His humor was unmatched. I first met Gordon when he was a substitute teacher. Gordon lit up the classroom in a quiet subtle way. Later I had the opportunity to work with his beautiful wife. These two were dynamic together. Their love was unmatched. My heartfelt love is with you my dear friend. My heart is with you. I have lots of memories from growing up with Gordon. Our birthdays were pretty close. Kindergarten to Senior year. We were in the drivers training car together. We were all terrible! Poor Mr Kjar. We went to Senior prom together, because we were comfortable together. Funny thing, when my husband and I went to prenatal class, there you two were! What a great guy! My wish for your family is peace, and lots of great memories!
Gordon Kay's exceptionally witty and dry sense of humor will always be one of my favorite memories.
I'm excited for Gordon's reunion in heaven with dad and his dear mother.

Gordon was such a kind, thoughtful man and a wonderful teacher. It was joy to work with him at Terra Linda. He built lasting relationships in his quiet, caring way. Thank you to the family for sharing him with us.
Wendy and I were so sorry to learn about Gordon’s passing. He is such a kind and good-natured person, always quick to laugh and bring warmth to those around him. He makes a lasting impression on everyone who knows him. Shauna, please know that your family is in our thoughts during this difficult time.

I am one of the many, many parents who knew Mr. Funk at Terra Linda. Even though neither of my girls were in his class, he was still well-known to us as he was always friendly and would say hello to us as we helped out in our kids’ classes.

He was seriously one of my favorite humans. When I worked in the office we loved to pull pranks on him. Our favorite was wearing all of his Tommy shirts on his birthday. All he could say was “Don’t stretch them out” He let me drive his Mustang to Arctic Circle and when I came back I messed with his seat and moved it up. Blasted the radio, turned on the wipers. We sat and watched him panic as he got in his car to leave.
The Valentines he gave us was ruthless but also came with a big sugar cookie so it made it ok. I could go on and on with memories.
I cried at the last dinosaur fair when he taught my son. I can’t remember how many bulletin boards he had me do over as a mom helper because it was not perfect. He is truly the best! He will always hold a special place in my heart for all these special memories.
Absolutely loved him - will miss him a great deal! Who am I supposed to go to Dairy Queen with now? Hugs to Shawna, Chris, Em, Melissa, Bret, and all grandkids!
