Gordon Albert Allcott

1928 ~ 2017

Gordon A. Allcott passed away due to causes incidental to age at the Legacy House in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. Gordon was born on November 1, 1928 to Austin Verne Allcott and Phyllis Piper in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. He attended school there, graduating from East High School and then from the University of Utah with a degree in health and physical education. He married Joanne VanOs on June 10, 1950 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were the parents of 6 children, Bruce Howard (Maureen) of Nampa, Idaho; Debra Ann (Merlin Andersen) of Firth, Idaho; Shauna Lee (Jon Holst) of Ucon, Idaho; Denise (Rob Bullen) of Lincoln, Idaho; Kevin Eugene (Lynn) of Bountiful, and Allen Kenneth (Candace) of Maricopa, Arizona. They were later divorced.

Gordon was an avid skier and eventually was one of the first 4 founding professional Ski Patrolmen at the Alta Ski Resort and made an effort to ski with the patrol there every winter, often taking his vacations to do so. He loved his involvement with fellow ski patrollers and is a legend among the Ski Patrol and staff at Alta to this day!

In 1952, Gordon moved with his family to Dragerton, Carbon County, Utah where Gordon taught math for a couple of years at Dragerton Junior High School in a building known to be the largest wood-frame school building west of the Mississippi. He went to work in 1954 for United States Steel Geneva Steel mining operations in Dragerton. The family moved from Dragerton back to Salt Lake City and lived in his childhood home at 1467 So. 14th East for a couple of years where he worked for Wasatch Chemical Company and he then transferred with the same company to manage their Idaho Falls, Idaho branch where he worked until his divorce from Joanne. At that time, he moved back to Salt Lake City with the same company which later became Great Western Chemical.

He married Margaret Ann "Peg" Ott Barnes on Dec. 6, 1972, She was also a ski patrol member at Alta and they enjoyed many years together. He gained 2 sons, Charles R. Barnes (Emily) and Bruce H. Barnes (Cynthia) and grandchildren Shelley, Andrew and Sarah Barnes from her family as well and thoroughly enjoyed his relationship with them as family.

Gordon worked in the field of safety operations for Hercules Corp. and later as a consultant to companies throughout the country and world. After retiring he enjoyed traveling the motorhome circuit for years and traveling throughout the world with Peg prior to her death and after with traveling friends, Gene Morton and Ruth McEntire. He made his retirement home at the South Towne Ranch in Sandy, Utah before moving to the Legacy House in January.

Gordon was preceded in death by both parents, his wife Peg, his older brother Charles Robert Allcott and his younger brother John Hamilton Allcott and a grandson Jacob Hamilton Allcott. He is survived by his six children, 2 step-children and their spouses, 28 grandchildren, and 68 great-grandchildren.

He is fondly remembered by all who knew him and will be missed by his many friends and family.

A visitation and viewing will be held on Saturday February 25, 2017 from 11:00 AM until 12:00 noon at Larkin Sunset Lawn 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers the family would encourage donations to Primary Children's Hospital or the Shriners Hospital for Children.
