Elbert Thames

1925 ~ 2015

Elbert Thames, age 89 of Taylorsville, Utah passed away September 19, 2015 at his residence.He was born November 12, 1925 in Stratton, Mississippi, the son of EJ Thames and Ethel Russell. He married Quinnie Mae Wilson, later divorced but remained the love of his life.

Previous member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Elbert joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints January 12, 1980 and remained a faithful member. He came to Utah to follow the Saints. He was a temple worker in the Salt Lake City Temple. At the age of 17 he joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific in Taipan during World War II. He then joined the Air force in 1951 and served during the Korean War. He enjoyed cooking and loved to be around family and friends. He enjoyed reading mostly religious books as he continued to grow his testimony. He loved his family with all his heart and wants the best for them and will be waiting for them.

Survived by sister: Geraldine Montgomery, daughter: Cynthia Thames, sons: Lenny Thames, Kenny Thames, and Corliss Thames, step-sons: Eugene Wilson and Dan Wilson, 17 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: Parents and two brothers: Johnny Lee Thames and Willie Clyde Thames

Thanks to longtime friends Jimmy Havard, J. Kearney Travis, Jr., David Allen, the VA Foster program, VA primary care staff, ALS Clinic at the U of U, and the staff at CNS ‚ especially Lisa and Heidi for the kindness and service shown to Elbert.

Services will be held Friday, September 25, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Valley Park LDS 6th Ward Chapel (5233 S 3200 W), Taylorsville, UT. Friends may callFriday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery (2350 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT).
