Alice Dale Sundquist

1916 ~ 2016

Alice Dale Sundquist passed away December 28, 2016, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 100. She was born December 13, 1916, to Andrew E. Dale and Ingeborg (Emma) Weum in Ryegate, Montana. She was raised on a cattle ranch on which her parents homesteaded. She attended a one room school for 8 years, to which she often rode her pony. After high school she studied 2 years of Home Economics in Bozeman, Montana, and then 3 years of Nurse's Training in St. Paul at the University of Minnesota.

She was married to Raymond William Sundquist on May 6, 1939. He spent his working career with U.S. Steel, including as General Superintendent of Geneva Works, Orem, 1967-1974. They were devoted to each other for 62 years until his death in 2001. She lived in her own place and was still trying new recipes until her final illness. She is survived by 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading and many crafts, especially all kinds of needlework. Forty years ago she learned to quilt and it became her passion, her "reason for being." She hand quilted many hundreds of quilts, most of which she gave away to family, friends, and many charities--(never did want to machine quilt). She made over 100 lap quilts for Quilts for Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed. She was a traveling teacher many years for the Arizona Quilt Guild. She designed and had published quilts in ‘Better Homes and Gardens' and ‘Miniature Quilts Magazine.' She was a member of Holladay Quilt Guild, Utah Quilt Guild, and Intermountain Research and Medical Foundation Quilters.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Holladay United Church of Christ, 2631 East Murray Holladay Road, Holladay, Utah. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to promisehouse.org or fisherhousesaltlakecity.com both places Alice supported with her quilts.
