Maria Chagoyen

1929 ~ 2016

Maria de las Mercedes Justina Chagoyen Lopez, 87, passed away peacefully December 18, 2016 at Abbington Manor Memory Care Facility in Lehi, Utah.

Maria is survived by her husband, Pedro Chagoyen, her two daughters, Mercedes C. Marshall, Ph.D. and Maria del Carmen Chagoyen Bone, grandchildren:Peter and Joey Estrella, Anna Randall, Sandra and Curtis Art Reisinger, Brendan, Adrienne and Carmen Bone and Lauren Barnes Ph.D., 19 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Antonio Lopez and Joaquina Lopez Dominguez, her brother, Antonio Lopez and a grandchild Curtis William Reisinger Jr.

Born in Havana, Cuba, she graduated from The University of Havana with a degree in Accounting. She married Pedro Chagoyen in 1949 in Havana, Cuba.

Maria was an Accountant for the jewelry businesses which she had with her husband in Havana, Cuba, Miami, Florida and New York City, New York. Together with her husband they served an honorable, full time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

She will be remembered as a vibrant, enthusiastic, determined woman who encouraged all to pursue their goals. As a nurturer she enjoyed singing and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was passionate about her work, education, family and church.

She was an active and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for 38 years and served as a Relief Society President for a good part of those years.

A funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S.) in Sandy, Utah with a visitation prior from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Maria's life. Flowers can be sent to The Bone's at 1337 Fish Creek Drive, Lehi, Utah 84045.
