Hector Alarcón

Hector Alarcón age 73 passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 6, 2022, at his home in Walnut, California. He was the husband of Beulah Betts-de Alarcón; they shared almost 50 loving years together, 45 of them happily married.

Born in La Paz, Bolivia on October 5, 1948, he was the son of Edmundo Roman Alarcón Zapata and Beatriz Blanca Humerez de Alarcón. He attended the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz majoring in Electrical Engineering. Later he attended and graduated from Brigham Young University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Agronomy, and two PhD’s in Instructional Science and Technology. Hector loved school so much he returned to attend California Polytechnic University of Pomona where he completed his teaching credentials. A few years later, he earned a master’s degree in School Administration at Point Loma Nazarene University of San Diego.

He was a member of the Missionary Committee of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While at BYU he developed several projects for the Instructional Science Department. He wrote several books for the Literacy Program that were used throughout Latin America. When he completed his PhD, Hector became a Corporate Executive for Environmental Contracting Corporation where he worked for 12 years. Eventually, he left the corporate world to achieve his dream of becoming an educator. He taught research at the Osteopath School of Medicine in California. He used his extensive background in education to teach science to underserved students at Ramona Junior High School.

On July 13, 1968, Hector and his childhood family became one of the pioneer families in Bolivia to be baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1972 he became the third full time missionary from Bolivia and served a two-year mission in the Santiago, Chile Mission. He served as a Young Men President for the Bolivian Mission. Later in life he served as a BSA Scoutmaster for the Lemon Creek Ward in Walnut California where he helped many of their young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

In his youth, Hector enjoyed the game of chess and was the national chess champion of Bolivian. He also represented BYU in the USA National Chess Tournament. He coached many generations of soccer players in Walnut AYSO Region 624. His hobbies included photography, collecting, tinkering with electronics, and reading. He will be remembered for his incredible intelligence, unique sense of humor, being a prankster, always honoring his word, and being a grateful and generally caring person.

He is survived by his wife, his sister Zelma and brother-in-law Tim Bright, children, Raymund Alarcón, Beatriz Alarcón-Jordan, Simon Alarcón, Adam Alarcón, Julia Alarcón, Sarah Alarcón, Jedidiah Alarcón, four in-law children Fabiana Alarcón, Gabriella Alarcón, Kenneth Jordan, Krystal De la Rosa M.D. , and ten grandchildren Rachel Alarcón (17), Logan Alarcón (15), Rebecca Jordan (13), Gregory Alarcón (13), Arabella Alarcón (9), Harlem Alarcón (5), William Jordan (4), Walter Jordan (4), Evelyn Alarcón (2), Isabella Alarcón (coming in July)

The services (Visitation at 12pm/Funeral Service at 2pm/Interment at 3pm) will be held on March 19, 2022, at Larkin Mortuary 2350 E. 1300 S., Salt Lake City, Utah 84108
