Heinz Otto Flurer

1954 ~ 2023

Heinz Otto Flurer, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully in his home on June 27, 2023. Heinz was born in Eschweiler, Germany on January 4, 1954, to Christel and Rolf Flurer. The family immigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. Heinz was an avid Boy Scout. At the time he attained the rank of Eagle Scout, he earned the second most merit badges of any scout. He graduated from East High School in 1972. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Austria from 1973-1975.

Heinz married his cherished wife, Monika in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1975. Together they raised 5 children. Heinz shared his compassion with others through many church callings including his tenure as a Bishop.

Heinz was a member of the Utah Glass Association and The National Masonry Heaters Association. He was also president of the Bear River Ranch Association for 31 years. He was generous, loyal and caring. His family and friends will miss him greatly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Rolf and Christel Flurer. He is survived by his wife Monika Flurer; his five children: Nina Flurer, Kersten Flurer (Laurie), Virginia Flurer Keitel (Mark), Jason Flurer (Verity), and Christel Flurer Ernstsen (Isaac); his twelve grandchildren; and his sister Judith Flurer Wilkins.

Funeral services will be held in the Wilford Ward building (3080 S Kenwood St, SLC, UT 84106) on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held before the funeral services from 10:00 to 10:45 AM. Interment will be at Larkin Sunset Lawn (2350 E 1300 S, SLC, UT 84108).

I was so glad we got to see Heinz just a couple of months ago. He is a fun friend to have. Iremember him entertaining me as a missionary in Linz, Austria, while I was about 5 years young. Always looking out for me and my family. He is in a better place now. I feel for his family, who I appreciate very much.

It was my absolute pleasure to have known Heinz and to have served with him in the bishopric. I have met very few people in my life so dedicated to serving the Lord by outwardly loving his fellow beings and who saw each person he interacted with truly as children of our Heavenly Father. Heinz had that “German” way of being able to reprove at times while showing an increase of love. I will certainly miss his warm smile and friendly handshake.

To Monika and the family, I pray that you will all have the added blessing of Heinz being added to the list of angels around you and you can feel his presence as he continues to share the Gospel on the other side of the veil.

‘’Til we meet again Bishop.

I have known and served with Heinz for over almost two decades in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In that time we have become good friends and have spent much time speaking about our families, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the many blessings and miracles that are afforded to us in this life. Heinz was a true Christian and servant to the people he knew in this life. I will miss him and our discussions.

Heinz O Flurer was a wonderful and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. Heinz always helped the helpless and the down trodden. He always helped those with special needs. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. The world is much dimmer because he has left use. He was and is one of my closest friends and I will miss him. God bless his wonderful family and may they be filled with the peace of the Savior.

Till we meet again my eternal friend,

Love Jim McCrea Jr.

Jim and I have been friends with Heinz since our childhood. We grew up in the same ward. We have many fond memories of Heinz and Monika, from helping with their reception cake and decorations to going to work Christmas parties at Beehive Glass together. Before Heinz helped Jim get his job with Beehive, we went thru a 12 month period of no employment. That Christmas, Heinz gave us a hundred dollar bill! We were thrilled and squeezed every penny out of that bill to provide our 3 children a more than adequate Christmas. In memory of that, we have given someone in need a $100 bill every year since that!! Thank you Heinz and Monika for always remembering us.
