Raymond ‘Ray' Lemke 1930 ~ 2019

Sandy, Utah

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Saturday, March 16, 2019. He was born to John and Justina Lemke from Lemmon, South Dakota and raised on the family farm with eight sisters and twin brothers. When asked about the farm, Ray said it was nothing but hard work! It was a bunch of kids, a pig, cattle, chickens, and his favorite horse, Trigger. He took the first opportunity to leave the farm and joined the Navy. He was honored to serve his country.

Ray married Ella Johnson in 1953 and they shared 66 years together. He loved her and was proud he could provide a beautiful home. They had three children: Steve, Shar, and Denise. In the early 1960s Ray founded Lemke Concrete Construction. He was a cement man through and through. Always a hard worker, he was known as ‘The Bear' on the job, and sometimes at home. Ray would do cement work in his sleep and talking about work was a favorite pastime. He was happy to turn the company over to his son, Steve, when he retired.

Ray was a faithful member of Salt Lake Christian Center and later Canyons Church. He served in many leadership roles including Board Member for over 25 years. He read the Bible and prayed for his family daily.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling with his family. Ray loved family gatherings and spending time with loved ones. He had an appreciation for his heritage and enjoyed the fact that he had German and Russian ancestors.

Ray is survived by his wife Ella, three children; Steve (Renee) Lemke, Shar Austin, Denise (Tom) Haycock; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, AJ and Michael and one great granddaughter, Kindra. Ray was preceded in death by his grandson Matthew Lemke. We will miss our father, as he was a great dad and we look forward to seeing him again someday.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 22, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. preceded by a viewing from 12:30 to 1:40 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens 1950 E. 10600 S. Sandy, UT. Online condolences may be made at www.larkinmortuary.com/obituaries/. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Diabetes Association. The family would like to thank the many insulin nurses who served Ray. He is happy you are no longer poking him!
