Grant Mabey

1927 ~ 2018

Grant Mabey passed away on May 23, 2018 due to ailments incident to old age. Grant was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on November 29, 1927, to Harry Edward Mabey and Laurett Rogerson Mabey. Graduated West High School, after which he joined the US Navy during WWII, where he served at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. After honorable discharge from the Navy, he met Lois Gerrard while working at Montgomery Ward Department store in Salt Lake City. They were married on June 9, 1949. Marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Grant's life was one of service. He served in several church positions including 14 years as a High Counselor in the LDS Salt Lake Pioneer Stake, helping demolish two elementary schools and selling the materials and vacant properties, and serving on the general church YWMIA Centennial Ball committee.

Grant also served as a Salt Lake City Council Person from 1980 to 1988. Some of his assignments before and during City Council service included (1) President of West Side Community Council, (2) City Housing Advisory and Appeals Board, (3) County Salt Palace Construction Committee, (4) County Salt Palace Board and Chairman of the Arts Council, (5) School Board in connection with earthquake preparedness, (6) Representative of Mayor Wilson on the Airport Authority Board, (7) State Committee for the use of the State Capitol Building, (8) Chairman of Salt Lake Police and Fire Departments, (9) Co-chairman of Public Works and Parks Departments, (10) Involvement in remodeling of the Salt Lake City and County Building for earthquake safety, (11) involved with flood control during the 1983 Salt Lake City flood.

His full-time job and profession was property management in downtown Salt Lake City.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Paulla (Brinton) Webb, sons: Brad, Todd (Sherri), 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and brother Donald H. Mabey. Preceded in death by parents, sister Lavon, brothers: Edward Leo and Douglas R. Mabey.

Viewing will be held Sunday, June 3, 6 to 8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary of Riverton, 3688 West 12600 South, Riverton, Utah. Funeral Services will be Monday, June 4, 11 a.m. at the Bluffdale Utah South Stake Center, 15429 Iron Horse Blvd, with a viewing starting at 9:30 a.m. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park at 3 p.m., 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.
