Lathael Holladay Fryer

1928 ~ 2015

Lathael Holladay "Holley" Fryer, 86, passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones on January 4, 2015, in Holladay, Utah.

Holley was born March 30, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lathael Leonane and Florence McDonald Fryer. He attended East High School where he lettered in football and tennis. He married his high school sweetheart, Marna Lou Callister, on June 14, 1950, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They enjoyed a deep and abiding love and were inseparable in life.

Holley continued to pursue athletics and a higher education by representing the University of Utah on the tennis court and in the boxing ring. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Holley also served in the Utah National Guard.

Holley met Alf Engen when he began ski jumping at Ecker Hill. Snow skiing truly became a lifelong sport and pastime for him. Holley taught his wife and seven children how to ski, as well as many of his grandchildren. Every Saturday in the winter months you could find the Fryer family on the Alta slopes with Holley giving pointers. He loved teaching people to ski and taught hundreds of people over the span of 28 years as a ski instructor at Alta. While the winter months found him snow skiing, in the spring and summer Holley could be found on the golf course. Again, he taught his sweetheart and children to golf, or at the very least drive the golf carts. Many summer Saturdays were spent motorcycling over to Park City or Heber from the Fryer family cabin in Brighton to play a round of golf with the family. Meals at the Fryer cabin began with his famous french toast and ended with Holley cooking his delicious hamburgers.

Holley was member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the scriptures and was an avid student of the gospel. He loved serving the Lord and he especially loved teaching the gospel to his children and grandchildren. He served in many capacities, including Bishop of the Olympus 5th Ward, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Stake High Councilor, and U of U Institute missionary prep teacher for over 10 years. He served as Mission President of the South Carolina, Columbia Mission from 1993 ‚ 1996.

Holley is survived by his wife and constant companion, Marna, their seven children; Mary (Charles) Westfall, Florence (Richard) Sorensen, Steven (Kathy) Fryer, Paula (Scot) Drury, Ruth (Michael) Smith, Sara (Roger) McConkie, Richard (Becca) Fryer as well as 31 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Angie, Diana and Melissa for the wonderful care they gave our father.
