Marion Kay Mortensen

1944 ~ 2016

Marion Kay Mortensen "Kay," 72, passed away in Murray, Utah on November 24, 2016. Kay was the son of Cleah Brown and Marion K Mortensen. He was born in Safford, AZ on April 7, 1944.

Kay grew up in Virden, New Mexico. He attended school there. Growing up he enjoyed living by cousins and going to family reunions. He and the other children worked hard on the farm. Kay served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission. Kay attended College at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where he met his wife Beverly at a country western dance. He offered her a ride home and the rest is history. Kay married Beverly in the Mesa, AZ LDS Temple on June 7, 1968.

He attended law school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After graduation and passing the New Mexico bar, he went to work for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Washington D.C. He got his Masters in Taxation from Georgetown. From there the family moved to Claremont, CA, and then San Diego, CA. Finally, the family settled in Sandy, UT where they currently reside. Kay acted as Chief Counsel for the IRS in the Salt Lake City Office until he retired in December 2011. After retirement, he continued to do some legal work, go shooting with friends, visit grandchildren, work on his engines, move earth with his bulldozer and manage his Coalville property. He currently worked at the bishop's storehouse once a week. Kay received the Silver Beaver Award for his work in scouts.

Kay is survived by his brother, Richard L. Mortensen (Gloria) of Chandler, AZ, and his sisters Sherrill Meisner of Phoenix, AZ, Deborah Thompson (Gary) of Rupert, ID, Dorothy Reidhead (Rick) of Pinedale, Arizona, Karin Frodin-White (Pepper) of John Day, OR, Sharin Nye Wells (Lawrence) of Phoenix, AZ and their families. He is also survived by 5 of his children, M.K. Mortensen (Lara) of Highland, UT, Kim A. Smith (Stuart) of Redmond, WA, Marnee L. Hadfield (Mark) of Richmond, VA, Michaal Shannan Withers (Kirk) of Sandy UT, and Brent J. Mortensen (Trish) of Costa Mesa, CA. Kay is survived by 23 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Andy, and his brother-in-law, Bill Frodin. Kay lived in Sandy, Utah with his wife Beverly.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Crescent 18th Ward Chapel, 2195 East Pepperwood Drive, Sandy, UT with a visitation from 9:30-10:30 am prior to services. Friends and family may call on Friday, December 2 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 South), Sandy, UT (Phone: 801-571-2771). Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
