Jacqueline Glade Jacobsen

1932 ~ 2022

Jacqueline Glade Jacobsen passed away peacefully on October 12th, 2022. She was born December 27th, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah to James Vernon Glade and Bessie Cushing Glade, the youngest of 8 children. Jackie grew up in East Millcreek, attending Sherman Elementary and Evergreen Jr. High. She graduated from Granite High School in 1951 where she was the valedictorian of her class of 400. She attended the University of Utah and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She graduated Magna cum laude in 1955 with a BS in business and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. After graduation, she worked in Los Angeles, CA for 3 years before returning to Utah and working for G. Homer Durham, the academic vice president at the “U.” In 1960, she moved to Arizona when he became the president of Arizona State University and continued working for him. It was in Arizona that she met G. Alan Jacobsen, who courted and persuaded her to be his eternal companion. They were married in July of 1961. After her husband’s graduation from ASU, his employment as a special agent for the FBI took them to Paris, TX, Grand Island, NE, and then finally to Salt Lake City in 1976. She went back to work part time at the University of Utah in 1978, this time for professor Sterling McMurrin, a former U.S. Secretary of Education.

Jackie had a strong testimony of her Savior and was a lifelong, faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She held many church positions, including Primary and Relief Society president. After she and her husband retired, they served 2 missions. The first was to the South Dakota, Rapid City mission in 1995 for one year. In 2004 they served in the newly-built Manhattan temple. She and her husband were also ordinance workers in the Salt Lake temple for more than 20 years where she was a shift coordinator.

Jackie’s love of music began as a child when she took piano lessons. She was an excellent pianist, accompanied her high school productions and continued her piano study at the “U.” She was a favorite accompanist for vocal and instrumental performers. A cherished family tradition was singing carols on Christmas Eve around the piano, especially “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

She loved her family and was a great example of patience, kindness, selflessness and humility. She enjoyed gardening, going on early-morning walks, reading, cheering on her favorite Utes and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Jackie is survived by her husband of 61 years and her 5 children: Glade Jacobsen, New York, NY; Darren Jacobsen, Salt Lake City, UT; Julie Downs (Rich), Farmington, UT; Todd Jacobsen, Salt Lake City, UT; and Matthew Jacobsen (Sarah), Bellevue, WA. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Lucia, Polly, Peter, Joseph, Joshua, Riley, Tyler, Michael, Sarah (Adam), Daniel, Mary (Zach), David, Anna, Clara, Sam and Isaac; and 2 great-grandchildren, Brent and Taylen. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and granddaughter Hillary Hope.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 135 A Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. There will be a visitation from 10:00 to 11:15 am prior to the service. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
