James George Houmand

James George Houmand was born on December 25, 1940, to Jens Peter and Vira Osborne Houmand. His parents felt he was the best Christmas gift they ever received. He passed away peacefully on October 8th surrounded by his loved ones. Being the only son, he became the apple of the family’s eye.

Dad had a love for horses and cars. When he was 14, he bought his first car and thus began decades of dad owning some of the nicest cars and trucks around. While attending Midvale Junior High, Dad met the love of his life, Marilyn Johnson, who he always referred to as “Dimples.” They were married on October 17, 1960, just a week shy of celebrating 63 years together. They were blessed with four children who were taught to work hard by Dad’s wonderful example. Dad was self-employed and owned and operated his own transportation business for many years. He was a proud member of the “Million Mile Club” and mom was the best bookkeeper in the business. We kids always felt privileged to get to ride in the “Pete”.

Dad was a true cowboy at heart. He always enjoyed a good rodeo, watching a favorite western he had seen many times before, or just being with his family. Dad always made time for his grandkids. He had such a special relationship with each one of them. They all took to heart the wisdom and advice he shared with them.

Dad has an endless list of lifelong friends. Many of them have passed before and many continued to check on him weekly in his last days. Dad had a special way of telling a story and his favorite line was, “To make a long story short….” This usually meant you were going to be there awhile. Dad, we would all love to hear the long story now. We love and miss you so much!

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, children Jami (Brad), Mike (Sarah) and Marcy, sisters Jackie Ahlberg, Lorraine Romero and Judy Hales, sister-in-law, Linda Whetman, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his oldest son Mitch Houmand, son-in-law Chuck Williamson, his parents Jens and Vira Houmand, sister Lois Carlsen, sisters-in law and brothers-in-law, Art Ahlberg, Bonnie and Ned Hermansen, Annette and Pete Nicksich and Page Whetman.

Respecting Dad’s final wishes of no funeral services, we will be holding a Celebration of Life on October 29, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South) Sandy, Utah.

I am so sorry to hear that Jim has passed. I enjoyed getting to know Jim at each brief INR visit I had with him- learning of his life stories, about his family - his beautiful wife that he loves so dearly and what "fun" he had working at the dollar store! He clearly was a man that was looked up to and respected by many. I pray for peace and comfort in your hearts. I know that many warm and loving memories of Jim will bring you all joy! With deepest sympathies for a lost friend.

Dearest Marilyn and family,
Please accept my condolences for the passing of your beloved Jim. My closeness with him started when he was born about two weeks and exactly two doors west of me on Union Avenue. For a few years I thought he was older because he rode a bike like my older brother Dan while I rode my trike. That feeling of looking up to him has never changed. And I will always cherish the friendship we had.
