After a lifetime of loving service our father, grandfather and great grandfather, James Heber Rane, passed from this world Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at 5:00 am, to be with his beloved eternal companion, Carol Sanderson Rane.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 57 years, Carol and by his parents Elmer St. Clair and Verna Lenroot Rane, siblings LeGrand Rane, Ben Rane, and Zella Hall, and great grandson Ernest Isaac Strack.

He is dearly loved and will always be fondly remembered by his children and their spouses: Blake and Maureen Rane, Gary and Sandra Rane, Marsha and Doug Vawdrey, and Colette and Ben Henderson. Also survived by his sister Carol Ann Basil, stepbrother Johnny Palmer and his 68 grand and great grandchildren. He will be forever missed.

Jim was born on November 21, 1929, near Pocatello, Idaho to Elmer St Clair Rane and the former Verna Lenroot just as the country was plunging into the great depression. His father died in a railroad accident when Jim was 11. After two years his mother married Vern Palmer and the family then moved to his house in Tyhee on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.

Jim graduated from Pocatello High School in 1948. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission where he met Sister Carol Sanderson. After returning from their missions, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on February 15, 1952.

He worked for Utah Power and Light Company for 33 years finishing as the manager of the Central Billing Department, producing the monthly billing statements/mailings for thousands of electrical customers. He also worked in the evenings for several years for Utah Wholesale Grocers as an IBM 360 computer operator. He took an early retirement at 55 years of age and he and Carol went on an Alaskan cruise as a reward for so many years of hard work.

Jim had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. He loved his family, and his grandchildren knew he would always have ice cream in the freezer for them when they gathered at his home on Sunday evenings. They loved and adored him.

Jim will always be remembered for his service to others, patience, work ethic, and his endless generosity. He truly loved to help others and was well known for his willingness to lend anyone a hand. Many in need depended on him. He served in many church callings which include -Councilor in Bishoprics, High Councilman, Stake Financial Clerk, Stake and Ward Executive Secretary, High Priest Group Leader, Ward Mission Leader, and Temple Worker. He later served with his wife on a second mission at the Deseret Industries where they helped men and women find and keep employment. They also served a mission as Church Membership Locaters. His greatest service, however, was to his children and his wife who struggled with physical difficulties throughout her life.

Many thanks to the staff at the Crescent, especially Shayla Dayley and to Makell Westland and the other members of the hospice team for their loving care of Jim and at times being the only connection for family during the Covid19 Pandemic.

Friends and family are invited to a viewing held at the Larkin Mortuary, 3688 W. 12600 S. in Riverton, Utah between 6-8 PM on Friday Jan 28th, 2022.

The funeral will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Jan 29th, 2022 at the Riverton Stake Center located at 1855 W. 13400 S. on Saturday Jan 29th, 2022.

Sorry, about your lost Gary and Sandy. Your Dad was a special person to me. He was such a happy person, he liked you for who you where. I try to go see him after he moved until we moved. I wonder all the time how he was doing. This great person totally fulled his duty on this earth. RIP

We were in the 20th Ward with Jim and Carol and knew them to be friendly and loving people. They will be so happy to be reunited in heaven and we will one day be able to wrap our arms around them again.

Our hearts go out to your family.

That was a wonderful service. Uncle Jim had the best smile. He was so kind. He had the ability to make everyone feel that they were important. I'll never forget family times together with aunts, uncles, and cousins! Uncle Jim and Aunt Carol are an amazing team. I'm so grateful to know them both. Sending prayers for all their amazing family. love, Sandy Sanderson Hawkins

I'll always be grateful for the financial help for my missionary son from the Rane family. Several years later that same son had the privilege of working with the family as Carol's hospice nurse. He and I love both Carol and Jim dearly.

I will forever be grateful for having had the privilege of knowing Jim Rane and his wife, Carol. Jim was truly the kind of friend you could always count on to be there when you needed help. Most often he showed up without even being asked. I cannot number the number of times he helped my Dad and me fix a broken sprinkler, install a handicap ramp, or take me to a doctor's appointment when I was told I would need a driver to take me home after a proceedure. He was my parents and my home teacher for over 15 years, and never failed to come by for a visit during all those years. In his later years I would drop by and visit with him and often he would ask me if I could get my accordion and play a couple of songs. After he moved into the Lodge I continued taking my accordion and visiting with him one or twice a month, right up until he moved to a different facility and the Covid Pandemic hit making it impossible to visit the nursing homes.
I am going to miss Jim, but I can't help but smile as think of him being reunited with his beloved Carol, surrounded by countless family and friends who preceeded him in returning home to God's presence.

We’re out of town and unfortunately won’t be able to attend Jim’s. Funeral. It was always such a pleasure to visit with Jim and Carol when they were here in the ward. It was obvious to us how devoted they were to each other. They were a great example for everyone to live by.
JoLayne especially enjoyed her opportunity to serve as Carol’s visiting teacher and l was blessed to serve with Jim in our stake callings.
We send our love and condolences to the Rane family.
