Janet Carolyn Secor Vincent

1937 ~ 2022

Our beloved Janet Carolyn Secor Vincent, 84, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by her husband and all four children. Janet was born on April 6, 1937, to Bernard Henry Secor and Lillian Augusta Hansen in Portland, Oregon. Her family later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Janet was raised with her younger sister and brother, SusanAnn and Stanley.

After graduating from East High School, Janet attended the University of Utah, where she was Homecoming Queen, crowned as Miss Utah, and became a finalist in the Miss America Pageant. She was a highly accomplished ballet dancer, performing widely throughout the Western United States as a member of the Ballet West Company.

While serving as social chairs of their sorority and fraternity at the University of Utah, Janet met her eternal sweetheart and companion, J. Garr Vincent, and they began dating. They married and were sealed in the Salt Lake City Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on August 28, 1959. After graduating from the University of Utah, Janet and Garr lived in Chicago and Baltimore while Garr completed his graduate degrees in both Dentistry and Orthodontics. They later settled in Salt Lake City, where they began raising their four children (Garth, Juliann, Melissa, and Blair).

In 1977, Janet was called with Garr to serve as Mission President of the Oregon Portland Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and they moved with their four young children to Portland, Oregon. Upon completion of their mission in 1980, they returned to Salt Lake City, where Janet served in numerous other capacities in her church, including as Relief Society President and various teaching positions.

Janet also completed graduate studies at the University of Utah, earning a certificate in Drug & Alcohol Abuse Counseling and a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) in 1990, at the age of 53. After graduating as Valedictorian of her class, Janet entered private practice as a Marriage & Family therapist. During this time, Janet counseled and blessed the lives of numerous individuals struggling with a wide variety of addictions and other life challenges through her private practice, LDS Family Services, and her church. She served as President of AMCAP (Association of Mormon Counselors & Therapists), where she received various awards for her dedicated service.

Janet had several life passions, including tennis, aerobics, dance, painting and the arts, and international travel. Above all, she loved spending time with her husband, children, and eleven grandchildren at the beach, Disneyland, and their many favorite places around Balboa Island, California, and elsewhere.

Janet’s family and friends are deeply saddened by her passing but grateful she is no longer suffering from her eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s. We find comfort in knowing she is reunited with her beloved family and friends who passed before her. She is loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Patricia Vincent. She is survived by her loving husband, J. Garr Vincent; their four children, Garth Vincent (Gina), Juliann Thompson (Robert), Melissa Auger (Thomas), Blair Vincent (Joni), and eleven grandchildren as well as her sister SusanAnn Stauffer (Michael), brother Stanley Secor, sister-in-law, Daryl Vranes and brother-in-law, Craig Vincent.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 28, 2022, at noon at the LDS meetinghouse at 4407 S. Fortuna Way, Salt Lake City, Utah 84124. The service will be preceded by a viewing from 10 am-11:45 am at the same location.

Guestbook/Condolences

I have fond memories of Janet dancing on the stage at East High School. Especially in the Christmas assembly. I can still hear the music.
I am sad to read her last years were so difficult.
Sincerely
Karen Passey Holt

We have always loved and admired Janet in so many ways. She was a wonderful Relief Society President and was an excellent teacher for many years. We were delighted by how she brought humor into her lessons by including cartoon characters Calvin and Hobbs.
We will miss her beautiful smile and enduring friendship but know she has gone on to a great reward for her diligent service and dwells now with our Savior, Jesus Christ, and is united with her family and loved ones.
All our love to you Garr and family.
