Obituary

Janie Sue Herrin Green returned to her heavenly home on Oct. 9, 2026. She was born in Mobile, Alabama to Nellie Sue Wilkinson Herrin and Melvin Herrin. She was about four years old, when she moved with her parents to Salt Lake City, later settling in Sandy, Utah, around the age of twelve. She was very close to her grandparents, who had moved to Utah from the South ahead of them. She attended Jordan High School from 1962 to 1965, where she maintained grades in the top percentages of her class. She was active in DECA, the marketing club, and won a state championship for her display project during her senior year. These early experiences reflected her creativity, ambition, and eye for presentation.

Janie met Calvin Green just before her sixteenth birthday, and later married him on March 26, 1965, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They spent most of their married years in South Jordan. After her divorce from Calvin, she purchased a home close to where she grew up, living there until moving to St. George, Utah to be close to her parents.

Janie was a hardworking and resourceful woman who held a variety of jobs throughout her life. She started off working for Sears Roebuck & Company at the age of 15. She later taught piano, sold Avon, worked in a dental office, several hospitals, the Salt Lake County Attorney's Office in the hotel industry as an assistant manager, and spent twenty years working for the United States Postal Service. For a period of time, Janie owned and operated a drapery business. Whatever the position, she brought her experience, dedication, and willingness to work. She was always quick to make friends and treasured those relationships that she developed throughout her life. She delighted others with her laughter and her sense of humor.

Over the years, she enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, collecting dolls, watching movies, and her casino trips to play bingo, blackjack, and slots. She took pleasure in the cars that she owned, especially her sports cars. She loved Mexican food. She valued being of Southern heritage and enjoyed staying connected with her extended family back South. She loved decorating for the holidays and endeavored to make them memorable for her family. She was always a thoughtful and generous gift-giver. She enjoyed watching QVC, and would frequently get shopping packages at her doorstep before Amazon was even a thing. As she grew older, she enjoyed crocheting meaningful gifts for her family.

She took great pride in her family, which became central to her life. She was privileged to help care for her mother and father in their later years. The time, love, and care Janie gave to those closest to her remain an important part of her legacy.

Janie belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior, a belief that was meaningful to her throughout her life. When asked, she said that her favorite church callings were being a Junior Sunday School coordinator and, in her later years, she loved serving as a temple worker.

Janie is survived by her brothers Roger (Kelleen) and John (Monica) Herrin, her five sons: Carl (Diana), Brian, Darren, Alan (Candace), and Eric (Maddie), as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Janie Sue Herrin Green will be lovingly remembered for her deep love of family and friends, her faith in Jesus Christ, her perseverance, creativity, and generosity. The memories she leaves behind will continue to bring comfort to those who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

The family wishes to express appreciation to Chloe (RN), Celia (CNA), Tala (RN), and the many others of Dixie Hospice, for their dedicated compassion and attentive care towards our mother.

Tributes

Your love and dedication to family was a fiercely beautiful thing. I am grateful for the visits and calls we shared, but blessed for the time Leelynn spent with his Mamaw Janie. I will forever carry many fond memories and a deep gratitude for those moments. Leelynn and I love you, Janie. Our prayers to those feeling her absence and may they find comfort in knowing what a remarkable soul she was.

Kelly & Leelynn

She always was more than happy to take my siblings and I for a week every summer until we each turn 18 and wanted to experience adulthood. My favorite summer is when we went to go see Joseph and the amazing technicolor dream coat. We got to meet Donny Osmond. I will always remember my calls with her and will greatly miss her in this life. Until we meet again Mamaw I love you so much.

Those pics of Aunt Janie are Great! It’s fun to see the progression. Her wedding dress is Marvelous! A pretty lady. I remember going out to Janie and Cals house when I was young for Thanksgiving occasionally and Christmas. To visit and see the cousins. It was like we were going out to the country, back when the Salt Lake valley was much less populated and felt much more rural. God Bless the family. ☀️

I am so thankful to have known Janie, though I only met her during her last weeks of life. She was so kind. I learned of her love for the Lord Jesus Christ and for her dear family. She was sharp and knowledgeable. She regretted that her health held her back and she rejoiced in her faith and hope in the resurrection. As I also met members of her family and talked with her neighbors and ward members, I saw how dearly they loved her and would miss her. She had a loving impact on so many. Our prayers go out her family, that they will be comforted and be strengthened in remembering her wonderful life and testimony of Jesus Christ.

Janie was a beautiful person inside and out. She loved the people she served at the hospital, in her ward and in her neighborhood. She was excellent at remembering names and made people feel extra special because she not only called them by name but asked about their children and family members by name. She had tremendous faith and love for her Savior Jesus Christ. Heaven got a little better when Janie was welcomed in. We love you Janie,

Janie's embrace was totally genuine. She welcomed me with open arms with the pure love of Christ. Always smiling and cared more about how others were feeling than talking about herself. Always in pain and 99.9% of the time she wore a beautiful, heart warming, contagious smile.
Janie tenaciously loves her children, grands, greats and they love her right back. She is busy now, however everyone will feel her gigantic charitable heart in every one of her children and continue through all generations of time. Her love for God and Jesus Christ touched my soul. I see and feel Janie in her posterity.

Janie has been the friend I needed, several times through the years. One time, when I was going through a divorce, I reached out to her by phone. She was there for me. It inspired me to write this poem.
THE VOICE
The voice came softly through the lines,
a lovely voice from bygone times
that sent my soul on gilded wings
to treasured thoughts of better things.
To thoughts of youths infatuations
and Simpler times in loves relations.
The voice came softly through the lines,
a lovely voice from bygone times.
A voice that brought back memories
like sailing ships upon the seas.
Each with splendid sails unfurled,
these memory ships that crossed my world.
The voice came softly through the lines,
this lovely voice from bygone times.
Whose timing met such accuracy
I thought a marksman aimed at me
an arrow straight from loves lost past,
that pierced my breast with feelings fast.
The voice came softly through the lines,
this lovely voice from bygone times.
It spoke of life and trials met,
of failures sad and triumphs, yet
unconquered goals and quiet dreams.
It spoke of these and other things.
The voice came softly through the lines,
this lovely voice from bygone times.
was this a gift from God above
to show me that there still is love
in this great world and in my heart,
if I will let the hardness part?
The voice came softly through the lines,
this lovely voice from bygone times.
To lift my soul past all those years
and fill my heart with floods of tears
of joy and happiness sublime.
This lovely voice from back in time.

So so many fond memories of having Janie as my aunt growing up, living right behind her, going to church, from tricker treating at her house Thanksgiving & Christmas times spent together, trying pimento cheese sandwiches yuck! To our casino trips, to our convos about having all boys. And passing on the mothers son letter to me. To being named after grandma herrin & her, just to name a few of so many! I love her, I will miss her. i love you. Rest easy!

Janie was a wonderful friend. I know that we lost our best cheerleader when she left us. She was THE BEST support system any family could ever ask for. Always encouraging those around her to follow their dreams and never give up. She will certainly be missed by all who knew her.
