Joan Nicole Borland passed away peacefully in the arms of her parents on October 26, 2022. She was born on October 12, 2022, with inoperable and complicated congenital heart disease and fought for 14 days to live the happiest life she could. Joan won the hearts of everyone who met her, with her sweet spirit and beautiful head of hair. She is deeply loved and her short time with her family was a gift. Joan loved being snuggled by her family, and her siblings especially loved holding “Baby Jo Jo”.

Joan spent her first few days at the hospital, but when it was discovered that she wouldn’t have much time on the Earth, her parents took her home. Joan’s 9 days at home were filled with love. She didn’t get to have many firsts in her life but her family made sure the few she had were special. Joan got to take her first bath at home surrounded by her brother and sister. She was able to enjoy family story time, reading books with her siblings. She got to go on her first hike at her family’s happy place, the Little Skills Loop in Corner Canyon. Joan got to celebrate fall at her family’s favorite corn maze. She got to dress in her first fleece Columbia jacket and match with her siblings. And Joan got to hang out at the park for the first time with her brother and sister.

Joan’s time with her family was a miracle, as she was not expected to live past a few days of life. Fighting for 14 days shows the strength she had and her parents will always be grateful she held on for that long. She was a fighter and fought until the end. Although the pain of losing her feels unbearable, Joan’s parents take comfort knowing that she is no longer suffering.

Joan is survived by her parents, Nicole and Eric Borland (Draper, UT), her sister, Rachel, her brother, Luke, maternal grandparents Boyd and Britney Liddiard, paternal grandparents John and Amy Borland, and all of her aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Joan will always be her parent’s sweet angel baby and in her family’s hearts and minds.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask for material donations such as blankets, stuffed animals, etc., that they plan to take to Primary Children’s Hospital and share with others during their times of need and struggle in honor of Joan. These items may be delivered to any of the family members.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Road (10600 S.) in Sandy. A public visitation will take place prior to the services beginning at 12:45. Interment to follow in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.

Funeral services will be streamed via Zoom for those wishing to attend virtually or unable to attend in person. To view the previously held services, please click the “Watch Services” link above.
