Joel Boutin was born January 18, 1996 at Fort Hood, Texas and passed on September 25, 2020 at Bryce Canyon, Utah.

Joel grew up in Temple, Texas and lived there until his junior year in high school. During that time, he was involved in the Temple High School theatre program and was also active in the Temple Community Theatre youth program, once appearing as the "Ringmaster" in their production of "The Arkansaw Bear." He moved to Austin and graduated from Vandegrift High School, where he was also involved in the theatre program. He also had a love for music and learned to play the guitar and keyboards very well. He was very generous in sharing his musical gift with friends and family.

Joel found a love of cooking while working at his first job at a Whataburger in Austin. Although he sometimes found fast food a bit restricting to creativity, he very much enjoyed making people feel good through food.

It was his sense of adventure and his love for the outdoors that led him to pursue a culinary career doing seasonal work at resorts in the western United States. His work took him to Utah, Washington and Wyoming. He was fortunate to have found chefs who saw his potential; mentoring and allowing him to apprentice in their kitchens. Joel was also generous in sharing what he learned with others, helping them to improve their skills in the kitchen.
Joel left us far too soon. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A memorial for Joel will be held on October 22, 2020 at 11am at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple Texas.

In lieu of flowers and in remembrance of Joel, the family asks that you consider a donation to the James Beard Foundation to support scholarships for young people wishing to attend culinary school:
