John and I met in Army Basic Training at Fort Polk, La. in October, 1965. Then we both were sent to Fort Dix, NJ for Advanced Infantry Training school for 8 weeks. In our 5th week, we were given weekend passes to New York City and we always had a good time together. We stayed at the Manhattan YMCA where we felt safe. From there, we both went to Germany for the remainder of our 2 years active duty. This ended in October 1967, but we kept in touch for the following 60 years, always as good friends reminisicing our military years. I will always miss these conversations with John. Prayers for the family. Max

Obituary
John Lionel Bodell, 81, passed away September 27, 2026 in Sandy, Utah. Born in Salt lake City, Utah on July 13, 1945 to Raymond and Lucille Hensen Bodell.
John always loved to spend time outdoors. From golfing, camping, fishing, playing sports, or relaxing in his backyard in his favorite chair. He loved sports especially watching his Yankees, Giants and Utah Jazz.
John had many childhood stories that became treasured by his family. We will all miss hearing his tales and adventures. Tinkering around the house was another hobby of John’s. There was always something he’d find to keep himself busy. We will miss his cooking, especially his beloved turkey noodle soup, something we’re going to miss as none of us will be able to make it like he did.
John is survived by his loving family including his wife, Eileen, daughter Erika (Kevin) Norton, Zac, Dominic (Bobbi) and his grandchildren Elijah, Skylar, Rubey, Drewe and sister Shirlee. We could also never forget to mention his best friend who was always more than a dog to him, Mario.
John is preceded in passing by his parents and siblings Sherman, Darla and Chad.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor John and his life from 3-5 PM on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road in Sandy, Utah.

We moved into the neighborhood 35 years ago. We met John and Eileen and there family.
They were always great neighbors.
John was always a busy body. Outside working on his house, cars, and yard. His lawn was always so perfect. I use to say that my neighbor loved golf and had a putting green in his front yard. He was one who always spoke his mind and would tell it like it is. I enjoyed sitting on his bench with him and Mario and just talk about fishing, camping, sports and the good old day's.
We will always be there for your wonderfull wife.
We will miss you our friend. Rest in peace.
Eileen, please know that you’ve been in my heart as Ive thought about you these past few days. Having just seen you and then a week later hearing of your husband’s passing broke my heart for you! One thought has continued to come to my mind - I can do all Things through Christ! He will always be there for you!💗🌷. Joan.
Eileen & Family,
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss of John. What wonderful man he was. He had so many wonderful characteristics. The one that is in my thoughts right now is his laugh. I can hear it in my head. John was kind and always full of energy and love. I will miss him dearly. I take comfort in knowing he is with his family that have passed before him. May god bless and keep you and wrap you in his loving arms at this difficult time. May you find comfort with each other and all of your wonderful memories of John.
I have so many childhood memories of Uncle John sitting on the back patio or grilling up food as us kids played in the yard. As I got older, I enjoyed great conversations with him on that patio. He was wonderfully humorous and kind, and made everyone feel welcome. He loved his family so well. We will all miss him.
Eileen, I am sorry to hear of the passing of John. May his memory continue on in your heart and may those memories sustain you during this very difficult time.
