John Lee Nielson

6/13/1943 – 11/3/2023

John Lee Nielson was reunited with his loving wife Rhonda at the age of 80, passing from a “broken heart” and a silent battle with cancer. Lee was born in Richfield, UT to John William and Lorna “Staples” Nielson. He was the oldest of three sons. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa, and friend. Lee was “Dad” to whomever walked through the front door, he never met a stranger – the kitchen was always open, and drinks were always available. Dad was a bear but had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt of his back several times over if you were in need.

Lee worked as the sign shop supervisor spanning a forty-year career at UDOT. He was active in boys little league, Salt Lake City Motorcycle Club, enjoyed having a garden full of peppers, sitting on the porch, shooting pool, playing darts, and always made sure everyone had a home cooked meal.

Survived by his children John (Amy), Shelley (Frank), Glenn (Stacy), Michael (Krista), Shane (Anne), brothers David (Glenda), Asa (Karla), numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews he loved and adored.

Preceded in death by his wife Rhonda and parents.

Celebration of life will be held at Larkin Mortuary on November 12th from 11am – 1pm, 260 E. South Temple, SLC, UT. 84111. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

I met Lee in the early 80’s at the Moliter Lanes where he was running a pool tournament. Lee was very friendly and we hit it off right away. We enjoyed many hours of shooting pool, conversations, late night dining at LaTarras and of course tipping a few drinks.
I greatly enjoyed Lee’s company. I traveled frequently with my work but never missed an opportunity to stop and see Lee when in SLC. We stayed in contact with phone calls and sports bets every few months since we met. I will miss my friend greatly.
My condolences go out to all his family members that he loved and talked about frequently. My God place Lee in a special place. I look forward to meeting up with Lee again.
