Joseph Richard Daynes

1923 ~ 2018

J. Richard Daynes, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on August 14, 2018. Born in Salt Lake City to Joseph Donald and Radia Parkinson Larson Daynes. While attending South High School, he met his life-long sweetheart, Yvonne Black. He continued his education, graduating from the University of Utah. Dick and Yvonne were married September 15, 1944, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 71 years before her passing in 2015.

He served as a B-24 pilot and instructor during World War II. Dad was passionate about his military service and continued his honorable military service until 1983. He was employed by US Steel and later by Salt Lake County. His remarkable problem-solving ability and ingenuity improved the lives of all those around him. Together, Dick and Yvonne traveled the world, sharing their love of adventure with many who joined them along the way. He took pride in everything his children accomplished. He loved the beauty of nature and took advantage of every opportunity to share it with his friends and family.

Dick is survived by sisters, Barbara Bigler, Marian (Jack) Millet, children, Teri (Jeff) Summerhays, Lynne (Peter-deceased) Birth, Shauna (Dale) Heisler, Julie (Paul) Thomson, and Duffy (Carolee), 18 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, sister Rae Jean (Mac) Maeser, wife, and infant son.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11:00 am at Wasatch Hills Ward, 2255 South Wasatch Drive. Family and friends may visit on Friday, August 24 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S. and from 9:30 to 10:30 am Saturday at the church.
