Were Scott Greer dictating this, it would be animated by a quotation from The Princess Bride or Seinfeld . Scott engaged life with a wry wit. He even joked about the cancer that sapped his strength. But cancer had the last word: Scott died Feb. 5 after an MDS bone-marrow transplant took an unexpected turn. He was 66.
Scott was the son of T.J. and Virginia Greer. He grew up in Salt Lake City, graduating from Olympus High School. He joined the Navy Reserve and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Returning to Salt Lake City, he earned a degree in the fine arts from the University of Utah. He was a gifted artist. And a good enough skier to work on the ski patrol at Brighton.
He met Diane Kauerz in 1975. He brought a guitar along on their dates, and they were soon fast friends. They married a year later and have remained best friends.
Scott was employed as a graphic designer at the University of Utah. On weekends, he worked as a freelance artist whose drawings graced the pages of the LDS Church magazines. He was never far removed from a sketchpad. Or his acoustic guitar.
Scott had an ear for comedy, an eye for artistic expression, and a deft touch on guitar. He tried to practice every day, and over the years, his repertoire expanded. He didn't need much encouragement to play a few tunes. He developed a cowboy shtick for the patients at the VA Hospital, and at family Christmas gatherings, he could be counted on for an Elvis-inspired rendition of "Blue Christmas."
Scott was a member of the LDS Church. He served as Bishop of the Foothill First Ward. The selflessness that served him so well as bishop came naturally to him. Attending to the needs of others was his priority.
After retiring Scott found more time for long walks with his wife, more time to care for his family, and more time for pickleball. He loved the game and the people who played it. He was a founding director of the Utah Pickleball Association.
Scott's survivors include his wife, Diane; three children—Sarah (Steve) Dunham; Adam (Stefanie) Greer; Jesse (Kortney) Greer—and a sister, Chris (Jim) Blevins. Scott and Diane are doting grandparents of nine grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the Foothill First Ward, 1933 South 2100 East in Salt Lake City, on Thursday Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 10 and prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m.
