Dolores Loveland Smith

1932 ~ 2015

Dolores Loveland Smith passed away peacefully on November 30, 2015 in Buckley, Washington. She was born January 26, 1932 in Garden City, Utah to William Milford Loveland and Leone Calder Loveland.

Dolores (with a "Dol" and not a "Del") was born on a very cold morning in January at her parents' home in Garden City Utah on the shores of beautiful Bear Lake. She was privileged to live in that home until her marriage to her high school sweetheart, before her high school graduation. From her childhood to her teenage years, she was a regular tomboy, and sported a broken arm and crooked back to prove it. These experiences helped her develop patience and empathy with her three boys and one girl—heaven knows they are a handful.

Dolores and Dean were married June 1, 1949 in the Logan Temple by President El Ray Christiansen and went to Yellowstone Park for their honeymoon. Dolores's parents helped them buy a house in Fish Haven, Idaho, where they lived for many years. Although Dolores did not go to college for a formal education, she has taken many college classes and did graduate from the LDS Institute of Religion at the U. of U. She has been a bank teller and bookkeeper for Walker Bank, a bookkeeper and clerk for J C Penney Co., a postal carrier, and for twenty years was a bookkeeper/secretary at Olympus Junior High School.

For nineteen years Dean and Dolores owned and operated a snack and candy vending machine business called "Double D Vending". Their business slogan was "making the world a sweeter place". Dolores did all of the bookkeeping of their business besides working full time at the school. Her motto in life was "Leave every place I go a little better than I found it." Even in her last years living at South Town Ranch Independent Living Center, she would not leave a common area without picking up a scrap of paper or speck of dust.

When they retired they served three different missions—Oklahoma, San Diego--Mormon Battalion Visitor Center, and Membership Locator in Salt Lake City. They never wanted to lose purpose or have a life of idleness, but declared they'd rather "wear out" than "rust out". She wrote of herself, "I am dependable and I do strive to take advantage of every spiritual meeting or class that is available to me. I am easily touched by the spirit and cry whenever the spirit touches my heart—which is often. I do not feel that is a talent but many tell me it is a gift."

Dolores is survived by brother-in-laws—Kent Smith (Colleen), Kay Smith (Jaci) and sister-in-laws—Helen Smith and Gwen Loveland, and four children—Terry Smith (Nancy), Toni Thorley (Burnell), Rock Smith (Trina) and Mark Smith (Kathy), 18 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
