Obituary Photo for Kathryn Pay Barney < >

Kathryn Pay Barney, our loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend returned to our Heavenly Father on Monday, March 21, 2022. Kathryn was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 29, 1944 to Douglas LeRoy and Edna LoRene Pay. She was the oldest of three children growing up in the family home on Creek Road in Sandy.

Born with the gift and love of music, she loved to sing and dance. Kathryn learned how to play the piano at age 4, becoming an accomplished pianist. She loved to share her talent with anyone who would listen or who would want to learn. She taught piano lessons for many years and enjoyed teaching many students.

Kathryn graduated from Jordan High school in 1962. She continued her studies at the University of Utah. A few years later, she would share her love for the Gospel by serving as a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints missionary in the Florida, Jacksonville Mission.

Upon returning home from her mission, she met and married the love of her life, Robert Lawrence Barney on May 26, 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple. Soon after, they would start a family and raise four sons and one daughter.

Kathryn worked for many years at Affiliated Bookkeeping preparing taxes. Her true love and greatest joy, however, was being a wife and mother to her five children. She would often sing to them and tell them stories. On lucky days, she would make her wonderful chocolate chip cookies that would melt in your mouth.

Kathryn loved the Church and our Heavenly Father and cherished her membership in the faith. She has faithfully served in many capacities and callings in the Willowcreek Stake. She served as a Relief Society Secretary, a Scout leader, a Primary teacher, and many other callings too numerous to mention. Her favorite calling was that of Ward Organist, a calling that she dearly loved and served in for many years.
Kathryn is preceded in death by her dear father and mother. She is survived by her loving husband Robert, her sons Scott (Jennifer) Barney, Mark (Erika) Barney, Chris (Karen) Barney, Michael (Michelle) Barney, and daughter Elizabeth (Dave) Wheeler. She also leaves behind her brothers Jerry (Renee) Pay and Steven (Christina) Pay, 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the many health caregivers who made her comfortable on her journey home.

The family will greet friends and family Friday evening, March 25, 2022 at the Willow Creek 9th Ward, 2115 East Creek Road, Sandy 84093, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and before the services from 9:30 to 10:40 am. Services will begin at 11:00 am in the Willow Creek 9th Ward Chapel on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Interment will follow the services at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, in Sandy.

Kathryn was a wonderful and cherished wife, mother, and grandmother. She will always be Robert’s Shirley and sorely missed by her loving family. Our love, Mom, until we meet again!

Guestbook/Condolences

Aunt Kathryn was always so kind to me. She was always so accepting me me as her “new niece” when Steve married my mom. She never treated me less-than and I always felt her love. I remember visiting for holidays or when she would come visit Grandpa Pay while we were living with him. Her laugh was infectious and she smiled with her whole body. I know she leaves a huge hole in her family and my condolences go out to them.
