Shirley Coates Butterfield

1926 ~ 2017

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Shirley was born July 25, 1926 to Ralph and Glenneth Coates in Hunter, Utah. After graduating from Jordan High School, Shirley married Eldon Butterfield in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on June 2, 1944. Eldon passed away in 1999 after celebrating 55 years of marriage.

Shirley was a full-time partner with Eldon in the sheep and farming business. She handled all the finances, moving sheep camps, driving hay trucks, buying supplies for the sheepherders, and so many other responsibilities. Her hands were never idle.

Shirley had many talents that included quilting, crochet, knitting, and baking (delicious cookies, rolls, and pies). Her many homemade items were given to family and friends and donated to local hospitals. Shirley just loved being with family and friends, shopping, sweets (especially donuts), and traveling with her husband, children, and niece and best friend, Maxine. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held many church callings during her lifetime.

She is survived by: four sons, Craig (Nadine), Clay (Sharon), Jay (Kelly), Bret (Colleen); twelve grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Patsy Dumas (Jim); and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon; parents; brother, Lamar Coates; and, great-grandchild, Branson Smith.

The family is so grateful for the exceptional care Shirley received at home over the years from Home Option'sdedicated caregivers. Special thanks to Lacey, Joann, Chelsee, and Sandra.
