Mary Ann Nelson

1943 ~ 2016

Mary Ann Baxter Warren Nelson, 73, died August 22, 2016. Born April 11, 1943 in Murray, UT to Golden S. and Helen Myers Baxter, Mary Ann grew up in Salt Lake City. She attended East High and the University of Utah where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. She married Russell M. Warren June 9, 1964 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. After Russ completed 4 years of medical school at the "U", they moved to Iowa City for his training in ophthalmology. In 1974 they moved to Logan, UT to set up his practice. They were blessed with 5 children; Stephen Warren,Deborah Warren, Jill (Jason) Heffner, Bend OR; Jennifer (Shannon) Pittaway, New Zealand; Thomas Warren, and 9 grandchildren.

Mary Ann lived by her mother\s motto; "See things that need to be done and do them\". She was instrumental in the creation of Lundstrom Park in Logan, and was the driving force that brought public transportation to Logan City.

Russ passed away November 11, 1998, but happiness returned with her marriage to John C. Nelson of SLC. At that time she moved back to Salt Lake City. She was blessed with John\s 6 children: Christine (Kent) Gregory; David (Melisa) Nelson; Catherine (Wayne) Bohman; Steve (Julie) Nelson; Matthew (Kelli) Nelson; Camille Nelson; and 17 grandchildren, all of Salt Lake City.

Mary Ann was an academic advisor in the Elementary Education Department at USU from 1987-1999. In 1997 she was awarded the Utah State University Robins Award for Professional Advisor of the Year.

She felt blessed to serve in various callings in the LDS church including ordinance work in the Salt Lake Temple. She loved the Young Woman's program and Relief Society program and made many dear friends. A highlight in her life was serving with John when he was called as Director of the LDS Visitor's Center and Historic Sites in St. George, UT from 2007-2009.

Things Mary Ann loved include spending time with her children and grandchildren, ladybugs, Raggedy Ann/Andy, sunny days, working in the garden, an organized house, painting and quilting.

Mary Ann is also survived by her sisters Helen (Zane) Bergeson of California and Julia (Terry) Christensen of St. George, UT. Her brother John G. Baxter passed away in 1974.

She fought breast cancer like a tiger since 2005 and felt many tender mercies during that time including a compassionate Physician, Dr. Saundra Buys and staff. A viewing will be held August 28, 2016 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S., Salt Lake City, UT 84108. Funeral services will be held on August 29, 2016 at LDS Church Garden Heights Ward chapel, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 South), Salt Lake City, UT 84109. A viewing will be held from 10:30 am-11:30 am with funeral services at 12:00 noon. Graveside services to follow at Logan Cemetery, 1000 N. 1200 E., Logan, UT, at approximately 3:00 pm.
