On August 4, 2025, Koleen Pratt Shaw passed away at home from aggressive bile-duct cancer at the age of 70. Koleen was born in Columbus, Ohio, enjoyed childhood in Riverside, California, and raised her own family while living in Utah and then her beloved Georgia. She attended John W. North High School in Riverside, California and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1978 with a degree in Nursing. Koleen worked as a skilled and compassionate nurse at LDS Hospital in Utah and DeKalb Medical Center in Georgia, and especially enjoyed her work as a nurse educator at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville. It was at her first nursing job that she met a hospital visitor, Larry Lee Shaw, who became her husband and lifelong sweetheart when they married on March 9, 1979 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised 7 wonderful children, a labor of love that consumed much of Koleen's attention and energy. As a mother, Koleen spent her life nurturing, creating and teaching her family things she loved most including music, books, service, scripture and the joy of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She found great meaning in her church service and spent her life serving in the Primary, Relief Society, and Young Women organizations, with a special commitment to visiting teaching and temple service. With great commitment and love, she cared for her mother Mary Pratt in her own home for 8 years before Mary's death in 2020. Koleen was a skilled seamstress with a passion for creating, making many dresses for her daughters and quilts for family and the Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Koleen was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, her parents Parker and Mary Pratt, and her brother Von Pratt. She is survived by her children Mary Brynn Stewart (Nick), Astyn Crawford (Eean), Shannyn Weiler (Caleb), Brittney Trayner (Josh), Dallin Shaw (Allyson), Parker Shaw, Spencer Shaw (Lalo), her brother Craig Pratt, her sister Kathleen Hyde (George), 19 grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Although we are sad to lose our mother and grandmother, we take comfort in knowing that families are forever and we will be reunited again one day.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Fox Pointe Ward 1465 W Bristol Ridge Rd, West Jordan UT.
A viewing will take place prior to the service from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m., as well as on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., both at the same location.
Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Our deepest condolences to you and your family.
One of the biggest shocks of my life was the unexpected passing of Larry. I had the privilege of officiating his funeral. I know Koleen and Larry are so happy to be reunited. My condolences to the family. Koleen was such a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.
Kathleen and George,
I remember meeting Koleen a few times! She is a sweet, dear woman and no question, a great example of all things good! 😊 I love you both and I pray for you to feel the Savior as He draws you nearer to Him.
Koleen was such a strength to our stake leaders in Lilburn and to all the sisters. She always radiated the joy that comes from living and understanding the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a blessing for me to get to work with her for several years in stake assignments. I know she and Larry are having a joyous reunion!
Colleen was a great woman! I’m sure she is loving being reunited with her sweetheart, Larry! My condolences to their children and grandchildren!
Koleen is such an elect lady. She has given and given of herself to family and faith. Koleen is beloved by all for her genuine goodness, pure heart, and endless outreach. I have learned so much from watching her handle life and all that it brings our way. With her cancer diagnosis and prognosis, Koleen was accepting of the Father's will and very prepared to pass to the next step in her progression. She did this with confidence in meeting the Lord. I am thrilled that she is with Larry. Now they are both complete once again
We share your loss and grieve for you — but we rejoice in Koleen’s graduation and joyful reunion with Larry. Hugs, prayers,
and blessings.
