Merlin R Timothy

1928 ~ 2016

The patriarch of the Timothy family passed away quietly in his home surrounded by the love of his family. Merlin R Timothy was born Nov. 13, 1928 to Delbert and Alice Timothy in a one room log home on the Ute Indian Reservation in Duchesne County, Utah. He loved the "Res" where he rode his pinto to school and herded cattle with his dog. He enjoyed pheasant hunting with his family in the fields of Roosevelt and had many funny stories about his childhood on the reservation.

He moved to Bingham Canyon at the age of ten and graduated from Bingham High School while working at Kennecott Copper Mine before joining the army and serving in Japan with the first occupation troops in Tokyo and later attended the University of Utah where he was on the boxing team. Upon his return from military service he lived in Midvale and returned to work at Kennecott Copper as a journeyman machinist. It was at this time he met his soul mate Myrtle Utahna Carlson and married her in the Salt Lake Temple on Dec. 17, 1948. They had three wonderful children, Christine, Carl and Scott of whom he was very proud. While in Midvale he was a dry farmer and raised chickens, pigs, horses, mink, rabbits and loved his dogs.

Merlin had a great love for tennis, pheasant and deer hunting, boxing, water and snow skiing, and loved working with boy scouts through the years and the young men priesthood programs. As a successful businessman for over fifty years, his passion for cars lead him to open Sharp Cars Inc. and Auto Express Rent-A-Car. He enjoyed investing in real estate ventures from residential developments to commercial properties.

Having served many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he enjoyed his mission with Utahna the most. They served in the Central Salt Lake Mission first and later in the Florida-Tallahassee Mission. Merlin lived and shared the gospel throughout his life.

Known for his sense of humor, he had a joke for everyone. His jovial spirit and kind way endeared him to others as he lifted their hearts and shared his positive outlook on life.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents Delbert and Alice Timothy, his brother and sisters Dolores Weichman (Ernest), Dee Timothy, Marceline Jenkins (Gene), and his loving wife Myrtle Utahna Timothy. He is survived by his brother Kendell Timothy, his children Christine Timothy, Carl Timothy and Scott Timothy (Joanna) along with three wonderful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
