Joyce Gottfredson Johnsen

1925 ~ 2018

Our dear mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother returned home to her Heavenly Father, Thursday, November 15, 2018, in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Joyce was born November 5, 1925, in St. Louis, MO to Dr. David B. and Irma G. Gottfredson. As a child, she lived in St. Louis, in Richfield, UT, in San Luis Obispo, CA, and in Salt Lake City, UT, where she graduated from East High School in 1943. She completed her nursing certificate from the Salt Lake County General Hospital in 1946, and in 1948, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Education from the University of Utah. Joyce was president of her nursing class and was primarily responsible for keeping her classmates in touch with each other for 64 years, through reunions, circle letters, newsletters and pictures. She worked at Salt Lake Co. General Hospital, the American Red Cross Nursing Services at Los Angeles Co. General Hospital, the Utah State Public Health Dept., at Presbyterian Hospital at Colombia Presbyterian Medical Center, and in the U.S. Public Service Health Cadet Nursing Corp. She and her eternal companion Norden M. Johnsen were married September 7, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised seven children. She showed deep devotion to her family, by caring for elderly parents, managing a busy household, and by supporting her children's numerous school, church and sporting activities. She served the community in the PTA/PTSA, with voter registration for many years, as a Cub Scout leader in the Great Salt Lake Council for 15 years, and was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Salt Lake North Company, Camp Twenty-one. She was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many ward and stake church callings. She served in the Eastern States Mission, and later in life, she and Norden served in the Salt Lake City Inner-City Service Mission. She is survived by her children: Philip (Janean), Nathan (Ruth), Miriam Coons, Russell (Shauna), Eric (Susan), Roger (Leigh Ellen), Stephen (Stephanie); 42 grandchildren (including spouses); 29 great-grandchildren; sister, Susan, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her siblings Marjorie, David Jr. and Peter. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 21st Ward Chapel, 2nd Ave. and K Street, Salt Lake City, UT. A viewing for family and friends will begin at 9:30 am, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank all of the many kind and loving people who helped care for her the last few years of her life. We will miss her.
