Clyde Emerson Harvey

1929 ~ 2018

Clyde E. Harvey passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2018. He was born on May 9, 1929 to Waldo E. and Maggie Hurst Harvey.

He was raised in Blanding, Utah on the family farm, and from an early age was blessed to learn the value of hard work. After graduating from San Juan High, he served a mission for the LDS Church to the North Central States. Clyde studied business at East Carbon College and BYU. On September 15, 1954 married Merilyn Mae Petersen in the Salt Lake Temple. His career started in Financial Services and later he showed his business acumen by building the world's first computer-operated self-serve gas station in Utah in 1964. He founded Rio Vista Oil Company and established locations in Utah, Idaho and California. He owned several travel agencies and was an officer in ASTA and on the board of Alamo Rent A Car. With Merilyn, Clyde traveled the world extensively and enjoyed the culturally rich, remote and wild places, but Utah held his interest the most, with the grandeur of southern Utah as his favorite. He cherished his time and created memories with his children and grandchildren at his farm in Peoa moving dirt and channeling water, and planting nut trees at his ranch in Rockville as well as hiking the red cliff canyons in Zion.

His appreciation of the arts, both visual and performing, brought beauty into his and Merilyn's life and home.

As a life-long disciple of the Savior, he shared his time and means readily, quietly and generously with those in need and contributed much to build the Lord's kingdom on earth. He served in many positions in the LDS Church and extended his friendship to those from all walks of life and from many nations. His legacy of being a loving father and grandfather has blessed and inspired his children and grandchildren to follow his caring and giving example.

He is survived by his dear companion Merilyn, brother Clark, son Paul (Kathy), daughter Marjann Hicken (Val),grandchildren,Matthew (Alex) Harvey, Thomas Harvey, Emily (Dave Marble), Andrew ( Eliza) Harvey,Nicholas (Bre) Hicken, Justin Hicken, Alexandra (Scott Melis), Gabrielle (Nate Sorensen) and seven great grandchildren.
