Larry Allen Smith passed away on March 1st, 2021. Larry was born on June 13, 1952. He was born on Friday the 13th and would remind his family that no matter what others think about Friday the 13th, this was his lucky day. He was born in Tooele, Utah, and was the first of 5 sons born to Allen and Mary Ann Smith. He moved with his family to Palo Alto, California, and then to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he went to high school. He loved his family and often spoke with pride about his parents and brothers.

Larry grew up playing many sports and enjoyed wrestling, football, baseball, and basketball. He excelled at wrestling and football and did both at Mitchell High School. He was intelligent and successful academically.

Larry decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and went to Utah State University. It was during this time that he met Irene Peterson during a trip with friends to Bear Lake. Larry and Irene fell in love and were married in 1974. They bought a house and moved to what was then the small town of Centerville, Utah.

In Centerville, they grew their family as they had three children who Larry would love with all of his heart. Russell was born first and two years later Marshall was born. Three years after Marshall was born, they were blessed to have a baby girl, Erin.

Larry would spend countless hours with his children. Along with being their loving father, he was their friend, teacher, coach, and role model. Larry spent many hours volunteering in youth sports. He coached Russell and Marshall’s baseball, football, and soccer teams. He was the League Director of Centerville Baseball and the President of Viewmont Ute Conference Football. Everyone at the Centerville ballpark knew Larry. It’s probable that any young man in Centerville who grew up playing baseball during this time can remember having Larry pitch batting practice to them.

Larry owned and ran the construction company, L.A. Smith Drywall. He had many friends who worked in this field in the Davis County area. Several became his golf buddies. After finishing up volunteering in youth sports he became a regular golfer and loved to get out for a round.

Larry spent his last 15 years of life as a grandpa to 8 grandchildren; the only role that would equal that of father in the joy it brought him. He was again in his element getting up on Saturday mornings to watch his grandchildren at their games.

He is survived by his family: Irene, Russell (Rachel), Marshall (Julie), and Erin (Peter) and his grandchildren Caleb, Andrew, Will, Ellie, Luke, Mari, Marshall, and Sam. He is also survived by his brothers Mark, David, Craig, and Brent and their families.

Private funeral services are under the direction of Larkin Sunset Gardens. For the Zoom link see the above link.
