Katherine Christensen Kercher

1917 ~ 2015

We will always treasure the countless memories of our wonderful Mother. Her sense of humor, quick mind, positive spirit, determination and boundless energy were remarkable. Katherine lived an abundant and long life, filled with love, and a deep devotion to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Katherine was born July 2, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the daughter of A. Eugene Christensen and Catherine Burton Christensen, both from pioneer heritage. Katherine graduated from East High School and the University of Utah where she was a Chi Omega. She had a double degree in Speech and Drama, and English.

Katherine married Edward F. Kercher of St. Louis, Missouri, where she lived until she returned to Salt Lake in 2012. She adored Utah and loved to hike its beautiful mountains, especially around her Chalk Creek Ranch. She was very active in the L.D.S. Church, having served in many capacities including Relief Society President and working with children in Jr. Sunday School for countless years. She was an accomplished pianist, actress and poet. Katherine was active in many philanthropic and service groups. She served on boards of artistic organizations, including her favorite, the Utah Shakespeare Festival. She received many awards, including Outstanding Alum from the University of Utah, and was inducted as a member of the Old Main Society at the University of Southern Utah.

Before Katherine married, she acted in numerous local plays, including the original Pioneer Theater and Kingsbury Hall. She was employed as a member of the K.S.L. Radio Players and had her own radio program. Katherine especially adored children, Boxer Dogs, flowers and her beloved "knitters."

Katherine is survived by her four children, Kathie (Chuck) Horman, Kristi (Bill) Peterson, Rick (Kathy) Kercher, and Jon (Holli) Kercher, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, her sister Elaine Tanner and her brother Budge Christensen and numerous nieces and nephews. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, and her brother Eugene.

The funeral will be held in the Yale 2nd Ward at 1431 East Gilmer Avenue on April 2, at 1 pm. Friends and family are invited to meet 45 minutes prior to the service. In Lieu of Flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Primary Children's Hospital.
