Lola Jane Hammond Cheek

1938 ~ 2023

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Lola Jane Hammond Cheek on October 11, 2023, in Draper, Utah. Lola was born on March 20, 1938, in Grantsville, Utah to Earl Leland Hammond and Marion Jane Lee Hammond.

Lola loved growing up in Tooele, Utah and graduated from Tooele High School in 1956. She married James William (Dub) Cheek on August 31, 1957, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They became the parents of two children, Jean Dannette and Daniel Shane. They were sealed together as a family in the Los Angeles, California Temple on April 9, 1976.

She worked for many years as a loyal Secretary and Office Manager at Bank of America, Continental Air Lines, Financial Advisory Consultants and Pi Omega Delta.

Lola was a kind, thoughtful, sincere, loving individual, who was known for being a "forever- friend." She was not happy unless she was serving other people. When "Dub" became ill she took care of him for several years. After he passed away in 1983, she became a Hospice volunteer. She volunteered at the Placentia, California City Library, with the Trauma Intervention Program (T.I.P.) in Orange County, California, at the Happy Factory in Salt Lake and was Secretary for Village on the Green Homeowners' Association.

She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she held many callings including Relief Society President. She worked in the Draper Temple and served an LDS Service Mission at the West Valley Scanning Center.

Lola was a great storyteller. She loved to take her family and friends on "Mystery Trips," have weekly card night with her siblings, and "Hallmark Movie Marathon's" with everyone's grandkids. She was very musical and played the electric guitar, piano and organ and loved to sing. She was a big sports fan, especially BYU football and basketball. She was very good at English and loved to do crossword puzzles. She also liked putting together jig-saw puzzles.

Lola was an amazing woman who loved being with her family and friends. She had a curious nature and loved life. She was a peacemaker, a caregiver and always put others before herself. She faced many hardships in her life but always saw the good in everything and everyone. She was very patriotic and loved seeing the American flag waving in the breeze. She was loved by everyone and brought joy and happiness wherever she went.

Lola was preceded in death by her husband, James William Cheek; her daughter, Jean Dannette Barrus; and her son, Daniel Shane Cheek.

She is survived by her grandchildren: Stephanie Arballo, Brandon Peterson, Brett (Tanya) Peterson and Daniel Cheek, and one great granddaughter, Leah Arballo. Her siblings: Kaye (Rod) Poulson, Keith (Lynne) Hammond, and Don (Lyndel) Hammond.
