Joyce Powell, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2022. Joyce was born on May 12,1938 in Logan, West Virginia to Ezra Clark Van Natter and Lola Mae Thompson. She was the youngest of five children.
Her family moved from West Virginia to Ogden, Utah in her youth. She graduated from Ogden High School and then later attended Weber State University. She married Carl Powell on December 27, 1963 (Marriage later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on December 7, 1971). Together they raised Joyce’s daughter, Terri Lee. Joyce was employed in several positions during her career, but her favorite was as a counseling secretary at Granite High School where she worked for many years. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed her callings teaching children in the primary. Holidays were of particular importance to Joyce and she instilled in her family a love for holiday gatherings and Thanksgiving dinners. She will be remembered for her love of collectibles, travel, crocheted gifts, the Hallmark Channel, and Diet Coke. Above all, she will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. All those who spent time with Joyce came away feeling uplifted, loved, and important.
She is survived by her daughter Terri and husband Mark Smith, her four grandsons, Chase (Heather), Shea (Emily), Kade (Chris), and Kameron, and her great-grandchildren, Chloe, Easton, and Elle. She is also survived by four step-children and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Powell, her parents, and her siblings.
Special thanks to Sunrise Assisted Living Center of Sandy and all of the many caretakers who spent time with Joyce during her final months. She received the finest care and enjoyed her relationships with the staff and residents. Joyce particularly enjoyed bingo (she loved to win prizes), art projects, cooking classes and manicures while living at Sunrise.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at Larkin Sunset Gardens,1950 East Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S.), Sandy. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
Dear Terri, Mark, and Family,
So sorry to hear of the passing of your sweet Mom and Grandma Joyce. She was a wonderful person and a sweet, fun lady. One thing we know about Joyce for sure - She loved her grandchildren! Over the years we would see her driving around at times with a grandson in her car. It is so hard to lose a loved one. We know your hearts are breaking. Thank heavens for the Gospel of Jesus Christ that gives the comfort and peace of knowing you will see her and be with her again. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you all be blessed with peace and comfort.
Love, Kevin and Cindy
