Stephen R. Terry M.D.

1950 ~ 2018

Dr. Stephen Robert Terry, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, physician, pilot and friend-to-all, passed away suddenly while biking through the beautiful tulips of Holland with the love of his life, Valerie, on April 23, 2018.

Born August 7, 1950, in Washington, D.C. to Robert Henry and Barbara Burgener Terry, Steve was the oldest of 4 children and seemed to hit the ground running! He was born with a brilliant mind and love for life and adventure. At an early age Steve developed a love for aviation by flying remote control airplanes with his dad. He continued by obtaining his pilot's license on his 17th birthday and later owned his own airplane. Steve enjoyed this hobby which allowed for family visits and adventures and helped transport those in need of medical care by volunteering with Angel Flight. Whether he was in control of an airplane, a boat, or in labor and delivery, everyone felt safe when Steve was at the helm.

After moving to Utah and graduating from Ogden High School in 1968, Steve found himself on the campus of CSU in Cedar City, UT. It was there in front of Old Main that Valerie and Steve's eyes first met, and it was love at first sight. With a Valentine's Day proposal followed by marriage on September 10, 1970, their love and devotion for each other has become an example to emulate. Steve and Valerie welcomed four living children and one stillborn son into their family. All of these milestones happened while Steve graduated Magna Cum Laude and completed his M.D. and his residency training at the University of Utah.

Upon completing his residency, Steve and Dr. Richard Irion started Cottonwood OB/GYN in July 1981. Over 17,000 babies later, Steve has lovingly cared for, cried with, and cheered on mothers of these special spirits as they entered the world fresh from the arms of our Heavenly Father. While providing the highest quality of care, Steve left a lasting impression on those in his charge. Toward the end of his career, he cared for and delivered countless grandchildren of many of his original patients. He received the Excellence in Medicine and Patient Care and Highest Patient Review award of any physician at Intermountain Medical Center. Dr. T was loved by all. He sat on many boards, but no responsibility was as important to him as being the patriarch of the Terry Family.

As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Steve served faithfully in many church callings. He especially enjoyed being Bishop of the Holladay Singles Ward and had a real love for the youth of the church. In this capacity, Steve would often teach life's lessons flying at 15,000 feet or while pulling water skiers behind his boat at a local lake. Steve was passionate about life's adventures, which he navigated with Valerie as his loving and equal co-pilot.

Through the years, Steve and Val have welcomed 14 beautiful grandchildren into their hearts and family. As busy as he was in his profession, he always made time for his grandkids at life's most important times. Steve was a teacher in all things. His grandchildren will be forever grateful for the life lessons he taught while sharing his many hobbies. He cherished his family time and was anxious to retire and spend more time with Val, his children and grandchildren. His legacy will live on through them.

We will cherish the nicknames he gave us, his many jokes, and his big, booming, take-charge voice and fun demeanor. He used his gift of love and caring for people along with using his priesthood when necessary. He was the calm to life's challenging storms. He was not one who required much sleep. Steve seemed to know that he needed to enjoy every waking moment and to maximize his time on earth. He truly was a joyful person and his presence will be sorely missed. We take faith and comfort in our knowledge that we will be together again one day and that he will stay busy getting things in order to prepare for that coming day. We know that neither he nor the Lord will leave us comfortless.

We thank you for the outpouring of love and support. You've shared beautiful personal stories describing how Steve has affected and influenced your lives. These stories will be compiled into a memoir for his posterity. Steve Terry, you have left your mark on this world and in our hearts. We are endeared to you for eternity!

Steve is survived by his wife and eternal co-pilot, Valerie; children, Brett (Sylvia), Bremerton, WA; Greg (Holly), Draper, UT; Brandon (Kellie), Murray, UT; Stephanie Strasser (Paul), Holladay, UT, and Grandchildren; Ryan, Mathew, Benjamin, Zachary; Gavin, Scarlett, Bode, Avery; Allison, Cole, Blake; Adrienne, Emily, and Brooke.
