Marla Kay Lay, our incredibly loved wife, sister, aunt, great aunt, and friend passed away unexpectedly in her home Monday, January 9th.

Marla was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 12, 1960, to Calvin &Carol Smith. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1978. At the age of 19, she started working for Warner-Lambert, who sold to Becton Dickenson where she retired after 41 years. She married her love, Michael Lay, on July 21, 1990, and although they never had children of their own, they always had fur babies at home.

Marla loved to take photos of everything and everyone. She so enjoyed the beauty of the world and the people in it. She loved spending time with family and friends. Marla was a crafter and enjoyed making key chains, wreaths, and fridge magnets. She made friends wherever she would go, and absolutely loved being a part of the Wasatch Car Club. Showing off her car, talking to people, and being with Mike and their dogs were her most favorite things in life.

Marla was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin & Carol Smith, and her sister, and one of her best friends, Lory Smith. She is survived by her loving husband, Michael Lay, brother Sterling (Betty), and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She will be extraordinarily missed by all who knew her.

I’m very sorry to hear of the passing of Marla. She grew up across the street from me and was always at our house or I was at her’s. I had the pleasure of working with Marla at BD Medical. Marla was a special lady that was always kind, helpful, and a hard worker. Once I moved out of the production area, it was always fun to see and talk with Marla in the hall and catch up. Marla mentioned she was going to show her car in Heber last summer, so I met Mike and Marla there and got to see her beautiful car. I'll always be grateful for having known her and I will miss her posts on Facebook. Mike, god bless you and take care.

I just can’t believe that she is gone. I keep thinking of the summer days when we were young and played in the neighborhood. And the night when she stopped by my mom and dads house when we were cleaning it out to sell and we talked for a long time about old times. My heart is broken to think that her laugh will never be heard again or her smile will never be seen. Marla was such a special person. She will be greatly missed.

I was so sorry to hear of Marla passing.
I worked with Marla for several years at BD before we discovered we were actually related.
Her grandpa Smith and my grandma were brother and sister.
I lost contact with Marla until she just a few weeks ago contacted me on Instagram. She was a great lady that will truly be missed.

Marla was in my first Laurel class at church. What a wonderful person! I will remember her smile, her gentle ways and her kindness. I never once remember her being negative in anyway. She and my son shared May 12th as their birthdays. I’m always happy when Facebook reunites us with our best friends. I stopped into Hires restaurant one night with a friend and who else but Marla came out to greet me!? She just had to show me her car! I was surprised and it was so good to feel the love that only Marla could spread. Mike, Sterling and families may you be comforted by the special memories of one of the best people to ever grace this Earth. Rest In Peace Marla.
PS. I watched the service live and again tonight. It was perfect. I also was at the gravesite. I had been sick so I didn’t get out of my car. But I am happy to know where she is resting so I can visit her from time to time.
