1930 ~ 2025
Mary Ann Izatt passed away on Tuesday December 30, 2025, in Madison, Alabama at the age of 95. She lived a full, rich life and she brightened the lives of all who knew her. We love her and we will always treasure our memories of her in our hearts.
Mary Ann was born August 29, 1930, in Louisville, Kentucky, the eldest child of George Adam Fassler and Helene Louise Mauermann and known to them as Molly. She attended public schools in California and Utah, graduating from East High School in Salt Lake City. She attended LDS Business College and graduated from St Lawrence College in Ste-Foy, Quebec, Canada. While she was growing up in Salt Lake City, she enjoyed learning to play the piano and tap dancing.
As a young woman she dated Jerry Izatt, who she knew from her neighborhood and ward. When Jerry received his mission call, he sold his car and bought her an engagement ring. She waited for him while he completed a mission in Germany from 1949-1951. Upon his return they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 18, 1951.
Following Jerry's graduation from college, they moved to the Los Angeles area where they started their family with two boys, Richard and Jim. In 1955, they moved to Baltimore, Maryland where they added two daughters, Peggy and Nancy, while Jerry completed his PhD at Johns Hopkins University. From there they moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico where they added a son, Joseph. Jerry was a professor of physics at New Mexico State University from 1961-1970. In 1968 they moved to Bedford, Massachusetts for one year and then returned to Las Cruces. Jerry and Mary Ann served in many callings in Las Cruces Ward and they developed many friendships. From 1970-81, they lived in Ste-Foy, Quebec, Canada where Jerry taught at Universite Laval. In the Quebec Branch of the church, Jerry served as branch president and Mary Ann served as Relief Society president. After Quebec, Jerry and Mary Ann moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where Jerry was a professor at the University of Alabama. Mary Ann served again as the ward and stake Relief Society president, and she was the president of the University Women’s Club.
After Jerry's retirement, they moved to Salt Lake City where they lived until Jerry's death in 2015. Mary Ann sold their house and moved into assisted living for a year. She then moved to Madison, Alabama, and stayed first at Heritage Assisted Living and Memory Care and then at Madison Manor nursing home. She was loved by her attendants at those facilities and was known as a gentle and kind soul. We are so grateful for their loving care.
Mary Ann loved and cared for her family, but she also had other interests. Mary Ann did genealogy for many years. She also got her father interested in family research, leading him to become a great genealogist. She taught her children a love for music. She grew beautiful flowers and azaleas in Tuscaloosa and was a member of the garden club. She enjoyed all kinds of sewing, from embroidery and cross-stitch to making quilts for hospital children. She loved to read and oil paint, creating dozens of paintings. During her life she traveled the world with her husband and children, including most of the United States, Canada, Europe, India, Japan, and the Middle East. In their later years, Mary Ann and Jerry purchased a cabin in the Uintah mountains overlooking the Bear River in northern Utah, where they spent many summers.
Mary Ann is survived by her sons Richard (Carole) and Jim (Mary Ann), her daughter Nancy Bemis (Greg), her brother George Fassler Jr. (Sharon), her sisters Elaine Papworth (Rich) and Judy Blackburn, 11 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, her daughter Peggy, her son Joseph (Susan), her sister Georgia Brim (Gary), and her parents.
A graveside service will be held on her behalf at 1:00 pm on January 8, 2026, at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery located at 3401 South Highland Drive in Millcreek.

Aunt Molly had such a happy laugh. We always had fun when your family came into town, going to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house for dinner or to the canyon or to Liberty Park or to my parents’ house for parties. And my parents enjoyed their stays with your parents in Alabama. She was a cute lady. I am glad she is with Uncle Jerry again.
