Mary Louise (Gammell) Winkler, our beloved Wife, Mother, Sister, Aunt, Friend and Grandma, passed away peacefully Monday October 30, 2023 after hard fought battles with multiple illnesses later in her life.

Mary was born March 2, 1955 in Provo, Utah to Blake and Louise Clyde Gammell, the very day her parents began building the family home in Springville, Utah. She was the third child and only girl born to Blake and Louise. Mary enjoyed bargain hunting with her father and she was her Mother’s little shopping companion. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood filled with vacations and large family functions. Mary loved her family deeply and enjoyed spending time with her brothers and their families. She was known as the glue to her family and loved being with her nieces and nephews. Her compassion to love her family and friends knew no bounds, and was exemplified in her special bond with her mentally handicapped brother, John. She has always been a caretaker to him but became his primary caretaker after her parents passed away. In later life, wherever Mary was, John was there too.

Mary graduated from Springville High in 1973 and later attended Brigham Young University, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance in 1977. This was one of Mary’s greatest accomplishments, especially given that she was one of only two women who graduated from the school of finance that year. After graduation, she went to work for Commercial Security Bank as a loan officer and then later worked for First Security bank as an assistant manager.

Mary met the love of her life and married Donald W. Winkler on July 17, 1981 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Don has always been Mary’s sweetheart. They built a home together and raised their small family in Sandy, Utah. But Utah couldn’t keep Mary and Don all year-round as both Mary and Don enjoyed traveling together. They saw the world together and spent a lifetime of joy traveling everywhere they could. They also enjoyed traveling with their children, especially the countless trips they took to Disney and Hawaii. As Mary’s health declined in her later years, the eternal bond she shared with Don was solidified as Don selflessly sacrificed to provide her the best support and care possible; being next to her side as she passed into the eternities.

Mary is the mother of two children, Scott (Jamie) Winkler and Natalie (Matt) Sadler. She is a wonderful mother who selflessly sacrificed to provide the best for her children. She was actively involved in their lives and spent much of her time as a young mother volunteering in their schools and as their church leaders. But if you asked Mary who her pride and joy was, it was clear that it was each of her six grandchildren: Mason, Kate, Luke, Emma, Ellie, and Jackson. The grandchildren were some of her most prized possessions and there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them. She loved to be with them and she loved spoiling them.

Mary is a dear friend to many. She has a charismatic personality and made friends with everyone around her. She loved to decorate for holidays and she loved to entertain. She was an expert gift-giver to everyone around her and her friends brought her so much joy.

Mary is a sister to Alan Ray Gammell and John Scott Gammell, and sister-in-law to Gayle Gammell, Rod (Diane) Peterson, and Brenda Winkler. She has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom she considered close family. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Clyde and Bill, brother-in-law John Winkler, and sisters-in-law Marilyn Peterson and Lori Gammell.

Mary has a strong testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ, which remained unwavering despite her health challenges. She raised her family to love the gospel and enjoyed serving in many organizations in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had an impact on many of those whom she served.

The family would like to thank the medical staff at the University of Utah Hospital, DaVita Dialysis, Valeo Home Health, Aspen Ridge and Meadow Peak Rehabilitation for providing the best care for Mary during her many health challenges.

A viewing for family and friends will be held Friday, November 3, 2023 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Larkin Mortuary, 1950 E 10600 S in Sandy. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 11:00am at the LDS Chapel located at 8945 S 1700 E in Sandy with a viewing held that morning from 9:30am – 10:45am prior to the services. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity in honor of Mary. She will be greatly missed.

We are grateful to have known and loved Mary. It was evident that she put family first. She welcomed her Canadian cousins into her heart and home. We have seen her love for others and witnessed her trust in the Lord when her health began to deteriorate so early. Our love and prayers are with her family.
