Donald Henry Sly

1928 ~ 2017

Sandy, UT - Donald Henry Sly, a devoted husband and father passed away on Monday, Nov. 27. Don was born in Salt Lake City, Jan. 5, 1928. He served an LDS Mission to Norway followed by service in the Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War. On April 12, 1956 he married his beautiful red-head sweetheart Marian Jean Oberg in the Salt Lake Temple. Don and Marian have 3 children Stephanie Boogaard (Rod), Holly Benson and Corbin (Michele Engle). Preceded in death by his parents, Claude Fred Sly and Louise Marie Van Quill, and his seven siblings.

Don worked for United Airlines for over 35 years, which fostered and enabled the family's love of traveling. He enjoyed continually learning and developing his skills, including designing and building several of the family's homes along with the furniture. Don had a thirst for knowledge educating himself in architecture, engineering, and woodworking. He was self-taught in many areas that had a positive impact on his family. Don's example of perseverance, determination and commitment regardless of challenges, will leave a lasting legacy.

Grandpa Don was a favorite with each of his 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He always encouraged them through example to work hard and become educated. A fountain of knowledge, Don could converse intelligently on most any subject; he especially loved political banter with family members. He had a ready smile on his face and never lost his sense of humor, even through many difficult medical procedures. He was a guiding beacon of steadfastness, never wavering in his commitments. Don had an infectious love for life and will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South) in Sandy with a visitation beginning at 11:00 AM at the mortuary.
