Obituary

Our loving father, Michael M. Homer passed on June 7, 2026 at the age of 87. A resident of Holladay, Utah, he died at home surrounded by his family. Born January 19, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah, he dedicated much of his life to teaching and serving others.

He graduated from South High School (1957) and earned a BS Degree in Business Management (summa cum laude, 1969) and an MBA from the University of Utah (1972). In 1981, he completed his doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) from Utah State University. Mike loved teaching and taught at Union Junior High before being employed at Utah Technical College (now Salt Lake Community College). He also taught at Westminster College, the University of Phoenix, Utah State, and evening courses at SLCC.

He served as Dean of the School of Business and Professor of Business Management at SLCC for 27 years and was a member of several professional organizations including president of the Utah Vocational Association (UVA) and the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (now Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Program).

He loved his country and served in the Utah Air National guard and in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, ending his military service as a crew chief of a KC-135 in the Strategic Air Command.

An only child, he was raised by his mother, three aunts and a grandmother, and was blessed with many good friends whom he cherished and loved. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he had the privilege of serving in the Logan Temple for eight years. He loved to travel with his sweetheart and was an avid woodworker, water skier, and racquetball player.

He married Margo Evans on September 19, 1958, and in October 1959 was sealed to her for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife Margo and a great-granddaughter, Sophia L. Aldridge, he is survived by daughters Kristina A. (Robert B. Blake), Diana K. Gardner, Minda L. (Robert C. Kjar), and Julia L. (Russell T. Jeffery). He loved his family dearly, and a favorite verse was, "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth." (3 John 1:4)

The family will receive visitors at a viewing to be held Saturday morning, June 13 from 11:30am-12:45pm at the Holladay 24th Ward chapel located at 4395 S Albright Dr, Holladay, UT 84124. A funeral service will follow, at 1:00 pm. Interment will be at the Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84108.

I wish you all well. I loved taking care of Homer and will miss him dearly.

Mike was my friend and colleague at SLCC. We worked together for many years under Ann Erickson’s leadership. Mike was an honest, compassionate, dynamic, and incredibly knowledgeable.
I will miss this amazing Dean whose steps were ordered by God.
Mike, rest in peace until Jesus returns and opens the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem.
Love you!

Wow, what a remarkable man your father was. Hard to say that final goodbye. It’s been 15 years now since mine moved on. It makes you think of the time you have left and a reminder that we are now those people we looked to as our children do now.

Most every week, I happen to pass the cemetery their ashes are laid in. As I go by, I spend a little time thinking about the virtues they taught me and retrieving memories of them.

I hope you feel my love and the love from many who care for you and your family. Including God.
